i was looking at a traditions Yukon at Cablea's for 199.99 package deal, or the cva Magnum for the same price. i know you get what you pay for, but any advise on if either of these rifles are any good, or just wasting my time? thanks

I own a CVA optima and never had a problem with the quality of the muzzleloader. I had a bud who hunted with a traditions. It was rusted up like no other. Then again he never took care of his guns. I take care as much as I can and my optima is the nickle plated so it dosen't creode as much or as fast.
If you are reffering to the CVA wolf it is almost just like my optima. I will say this though. The stock is different than the optima. They look very similar, but once handled you'll feel the difference. It seemed (to me) that the stock on the wolf the pistol grip is a bit to short and forces your hand right up against the trigger guard and the break release. I (IMO) was very uncomfortable shouldering it. Next time you go to Cabelas look at the inlines there in the bargin cave. You can find a lot of great muzzleloaders there cheap.

I bought a fox river 50cal made by traditions in the mid 1990's. Great little gun, very nice for stand hunting as well as stalking. It weighs about 7lbs and the barrel lenght is 25". It won't shoot a conical, but puts a patched round ball where ever you aim it. No issues with the quality of the gun, but I keep it clean. I am a bit of a purist in the sense that I like the precussion vs in line.

Me I'm a flintlock man! Stalking the hemlock swamps in the dead of winter with a Hawken .50 cal. Nothing like hitting a deer or a yote with 350 grains of TC Maxi Ball in front of 85 grains of black powder. Hope you enjoy your smokepole.

Go Russ Go, I love black powder hunting, it's my season of choice. I also have several BP guns and can only say that each gun is what you make it! If you take care of it it will last, clean clean clean and lubricate!!!!! My CVA shoots just as acurate as my TC, every one of my TC guns. You have to make sure of what you want before you by. If you want to hunt with round ball or conicals make sure you by a gun with the correct barrel twists to shoot what you want to hunt with. When you get the gun don't start with the max powder charge but rather work your way up to the "SWEET SPOT" and you will find most guns being made today are tack driving accurate. BP guns are not rocket science so just get one that fits and you are comfortable with, and you can afford.

I have hunted with a Remmington 700ML in 50 cal for as long as they have been out, I have killed 11 deer with it and The only complaint I have is the bolt flash when you tuch her off, even worse with 209 primer! I used to cover the bolt area with a piece of leather with velcro to eliminate this.
I just purchased a CVA Optma elete and sighted in on Wednesday, Im very excited about this firearm and the way it preformed on the range, It has a 29"fluted bbl and Appears to be a real reach out gun, Ill report after the first time I cut hair with it. Good Luck with your decision.:)
