Any other fruit tree guys here???

Started a home orchard three years ago when I built the house. About fourteen or fifteen trees in total over the past three years. First year...deer crushed the young trees. Up went the electric fence. Problem solved...

I've gotten some fruit the first couple years. This year, there has been quite a bit coming along between peaches and apples. I had "thinned" the squirrel population last year. They're back:eek: I bag the growing fruit to reduce the sprayings..and the god #$@% squirrles are ripping up the branches and chewing through the bags.

Between the groundhogs, deer, catbirds and squirrels...

I've thinned them out in 'traditional' means.....i'm open to additional suggestions if you get my point...:fight:

I planted some bamboo in the yard and found out that the sweet, sugary shoots are a squirrel favorite:rolleyes:. One summer, I trapped and removed 25 of them....more just moved in. I had the best success with this stuff, its a cayenne pepper based spray, bought it at Lowes. You'll have to check, but I'm pretty sure it can be used on fruits and vegetables. Just don't get downwind when you spray:p

I tried to thin them out as well. For everyone you shoot, another one shows up to replace it.

You need a good attack dog..

If I were a better shot with the bow, I would try to take them out while hunting. Tonight, I swear they were having a squirrel circus. They were everywhere. I had to see 100 squirrels. Shotgun season, game over, I dont mess around. I need to find someone who eats them.

Those tree rats make pretty good table fare. I haven't had it in awhile but my grandmother used to make a killer stew with squirrel and rabbit. She would cook it in the crock pot and the meat would just fall off the bone. It was in a type of brown gravy and was served over fresh biscuts. Damn, I need to get that recipe and some more #6's:cool:. Mmmm-Mmmm good:thup:

I have a bird (squirrel) feeder set up 15 yds. outside my picture window. While working at the computer, see a squirrel, then shoot them with an RWS pellet gun. Silent, accurate and deadly. The take has gone down a lot. Used to have six squirrels at a time at the feeder on a daily basis. Now get maybe two a week.

philjam,
exact same tactic employed in my initial approach...right down to the RWS
