I'm pretty new to hunting. I bought a dozen shells (cheap ones) that just stick in the ground. I also have a call and I'm fairly certain the sounds I make from it sound faintly like a goose ;)
The main goal is to take one with a shotgun, see if I like how it tastes, and if its something I can stomach I'd like to get one with my bow.
So my plan is to just pick a spot on the river, stick the shells in the meadows, and sit and wait and if I get bored with waiting try calling...I feel like I see geese every day of my life but I know its gonna be hard to see one once I'm hunting them...
Anyone have any tips for a beginner?

Ironspirit from one new goose hunter to another the only advice I can share with you is just get out there practice calling, because it lots of fun when your calling and they answer, and be patient.. where I hunt in Hunterton county there all over the place but it seems I cant be at the right place or the right time this year... in Mays landing you shouldn't have any problems landing a goose..... good luck to you

once you find a nice spot where you are hidden and you can call OK I don't see any problems for you.... its what I have done and I didn't do to bad last year, but then again I'm a rookie at this so what can I say...

find a field(or place along the river) that geese are consistently using. This spot is usually refered to as the X. Scout hard and find when and where they are coming from and beat them there. If you are on the X very little/no calling will be needed and you will get your goose.Another smart thing to do would be to find someone that knows what they are doing and tag along a few times. as far as cooking goes- cut the breasts into strips and make them in some sort of dish(like a stirfry or something) because if you just throw some bbq sauce on and grill them you wont want to eat one again haha. breasts are also great for jerky! If you have any more ?'s just ask. Good luck. if you succeed and have a flock lock into your spread you will be hooked for life guaranteed!!

Just need to find the X to give yourself the best chance. If not you can do what is called running traffic, where you get between where the geese are and they are going and try to bring them in. Get yourself a flag. When you see geese in the distance flag them until they see you, then give them a few single clucks and if you are not real sure of your calling, no calling is better then bad calling. Good luck you just found another expensive addiction.

I agree if you can't call don't! Found that out. It is better to go heavy on decoys and call less or none. Flag them in and lay still after flagging.

i was about to saw a glynn scobey is the cll of choice for my friends. the duck call is myfavorite of any i have. full bodies and ok calling can get a few honkers in your spread. good luck they are a pain to shoot. aim for the head if you are pass shooting and if thy are cupped ai center of mass. a canada goose is built like a tank and dont fall easily
