Received an e-mail from USP regarding an audit of the PA deer herd. The contract to perform the audit was given to Wildlife Management Institute for $90,000.00. They are based in Washington, D.C and have been doing this type of work for 80 years. Two of their top directors are former PGC employees who were fired by the PGC approximately 20 years ago. One of them went on to become Director of the Fish and Wildlife Service. Hopefully, they will be unbiased in their findings and will present the PGC with a deer management plan that is based on fact!!!!!!!!

The audit is unfortunate, but it is going to do exactly what the PGC wants it to do. WMI just has to prove whether or not the goals of the deer management is working. The USP has finally gotten themselves into a storm they can't talk their way out. It's a complete waste of money, but it'll also prove the USP bit off a lil more than they can chew. I wonder why Levengood left the board and their numbers are dwindling?

ACE: Just curious why you believe that an independent audit of PA's deer herd is unfortunate? I think it will serve to either justify the current management policy or expose it as a PGC endeavor to pacify the insurance, and timber interests at the expense of the deer herd. I was not aware that the USP was losing members. If that it is true, it is, indeed, unfortunate. They are the only group that appears to be genuinely concerned with the decimation of the deer population in a number of areas throughout the state. Dissent, as you are certainly aware, often serves to improve given situations. It would be wrong if we all accepted the PGC's policy without question in light of what has occurred. I look forward to seeing the WMI audit results. Good hunting.

i would love to see this audit show what really happens when you manage public land as if it was private land. there are no deer left on public land in tioga county. i don't want the old days again, but some place in the middle. what was going on worked, but it went too far. those mountains just can't take that high harvest.
if they don't change soon. there will be a lot of groups not taking the drive to pa anymore. it's not worth it for me to leave 40 deer per sq. mile and sit up there and never see 6 deer all week. i love the mountain up there, but a mountain with a few deer i like way better.

I say it is unfortunate for several reasons. The USP and the PGC used to be very buddy buddy. The audit is a complete waste of money. I'm sure we could do a lot more productive things with the 91K. The only thing the audit needs to prove or disaprove is are the 6 white-tail management goals being done. It isen't going to show some secret agenda with insurence and forestry compaines. What the PGC has in revenue and what is spent is all public knowledge. You can go on and find it out for yourself. Everything the PGC does is public knowledge. It's good that you question the plan that they have illustrated, but at what point are you willing to accept it? Some people just already have they're mind made up and are just unwilling to accept things unless it is back to the old way.
On a side note I was at camp this past weekend. My bud's brother saw some HUGE elk a lil North of his place. He took some pics and wow. We're talking 400+ class elk. One of them was a 10x9. Just absolute monsters. Still none around camp yet, but every year they keep getting spotted further and further South.
