The journey starts.. my chessie Baylee.. somewhere around 9 weeks
http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc18/drmnhipster/Dogs/waterdog.jpg

Her first hunt and retrieves at 4.5 months old... one of the greatest days I've ever spent on the water.

She's come a long way, and still has a long way to go, but it wouldn't be the same without her out there.

The first pic of beau is almost at 3 months when we picked him up to some home. The second and third is during a few training sessions in the field. The fourth is his favorite spot to sit in the afternoon watching the mallards land for the night. The last picture is of him and his favorite toy at 7 months and already 76 lbs. He should be ready for this upcoming season with both ducks and pheasant. He has come a long way very very fast, we will see......JM

Yep I stud my male out, I have pics of his last litter I will post some pups tonight. Beretta is AKC and nice old german lines in him....not a field trial dog. If I told you last year how many goose and ducks he retrieved for me you would think I was a liar lol.

I dont stud him for a buisness and I dont advertise. Its word of mouth usually. He hunts hard for me all season long and I want him to have a happy healthy life which includes the ocasional romp with a willing gsp.

My email is orange.n.black@gmail.com Give me a shout and we can talk. If your a safe hunter I can even let you hunt with him. I enjoy meeting new hunters. :D

No he is not a llewellin.... however he is line bred which is all a llewellin setter is but with the llewellin name.... mine is not a big runner he stays pretty tight depending on the cover... a lot of them dogs that have that "big Runner" in them have a lot of field trial bred into them ... the guy i got mine from strictly hunting lines... Len Jenkins wrote a few books on training.... comming from Michigan it dont matter you either cant see them in the woods because they are brown or cant see them in the snow cuz they are white.... pick your fight i guess lol..... enough about mine you got some nice lookin dogs yourself keep up the good work..... and keep them pics comming everyone

Dont put him on pigeons....work him on real game. Powderbourne opens in September. From their website looks like 140 bucks for 10 chuckars on their fields. I work my dogs there early in the season because noone can walk into your field and mess up your training. Ya got to ask for a field thats good for training a pup.

If anyone wants to go give me a shout. I want to get my Wirehair pup on some birds soon.

Me and Massbaster differ on opinion. Bird scent is just that bird scent. If not tell me why top dog trainers use them? I have trained Grouse dogs for the past 10 years. Prior to that Dad, Grand Dad and Great Grand dad did it. I say to Ace, you chose what you want. All I can say is I haven't lead you wrong so far. You make your choice. You have limited funds, I know this. You can get pigions where you are at for free. You'll spend at least 10.00 a bird at a preserve.

Massbaster,
Trying to break a dog from gunshyness is tough. Put the dog on multiple birds, where he can get multiple points, shots and retrieves will help this dog. I have grouse dogs to beat the band. You put a dog on a pheasant(smelliest game bird in the woods) does that help a dog lock up on a wild bird? no! Grouse and quail are not putting out a mass amount of scent. Puttin Ruger on some pigions to bring the fun back into the hunt will set this in his little doggie brain. Then lets bring him into a maybe a two bird hunt, to keep the drive up.

Massbaster,
I respect you for your dogs, but Adam and I have spoke about what he wants in the future. If you want a preserve dog, you keep putting the dog in a preserve huntin situation and that's what you'll have. Me, my dogs have hunted wild birds from South Dakota, Kansas and our Native birds the grouse and woodcock. My solution is used to bring my dogs back on point after a long summer. It only takes a bit. Ruger needs repeated points, shots and kills to get him from his hesitation and his shyness. If this doesn't work I feel Ruger is done for hunting. With Pigeons you get a bunch birds for min. cost. If you question the method read Paul Long's book. He is one of the top pointing dog trainers. I stand by his methods. Either way, its Adam's choice. That being said, time for bed! Night night.

Russ.....My responce was only meant for pre season warm up. I was under the impression he just want to get his dog ready for the season, I didnt realize he is trying to fix a problem. My reponce was only for a quick tune up for the upcoming season. Just like you stated, I only use the preserves in the begining of the season to get them ready. I hunt wild birds ie grouse and woodcock if im not hitting the ducks.

I was in no way at all even thinking about anything specific other than just going to a private field and geting the pups ready. I appologize, I wasnt trying to tell ACE how to fix Ruger, I thought he was joking around about the falls aprt comment. I had a sound shy dog and I know all to well what it takes to get the dog so excited it sees past the gun and bang part. Im 100% with what Russ stated about getting past the gun shy. Tons of birds and points.

Esetterman
08-11-2009, 01:31 PM
hmmmm.... gunshyness...cant get them around enough birds and shots.... i had one like this. he was to the point he would try not to point a bird because he knew a shot was comming.... im not gonna argue about what kind of bird because it has already been said that "bird scent is bird scent" i dont care if its a quail pigeon or whatever ... i took my dog to range once a week ... would start him a mile out and walk him in slowly keeping his mind off it .... also tons of birds i would take him hunting and not shoot at anything he did not point for a whole season.....it worked for me.... it took 3 years to break him completley and even after that he didnt like guns he just tolerated them.... as for warming your dogs up with birds in the pre season pigeons are fine i just want to add that pen raised birds no matter what the species are not the same as any game bird all they do is look the same. so i would argue that it dont matter if its a chukkar (which your dog will not find wild anywhere near here or this side of the country) or a pigeon....nither are wild here .... in conclusion i have broke adog from gunshyness but i learned you will loose a lot of hunting time... my advice would to be give him a season if he dont improve move on. however my dogs are to hunt if they dont hunt i have to get rid of them i dont have much kennel space, if hes your family pet that might be different.

massbaster
08-11-2009, 02:23 PM
Without going into a debate about scents and using pigeon vs chukar I will say this.....chukar eat much better than pigeon :D I have a hard time shooting something for the sake of shooting it even if it is for training. Unless your just point and flush and no shoot. Personally I want to eat what I shoot

Talked it over with RUSS. Gotta get em on birds and expose him to shots. Work in progress.

Like RUSS said he's got the hunt in him ( a lot I think), but with his past history it's making hunting hard (abused). We'll see what we can do.

If you want a "bird dog", you've got to put them on birds. The more the better. If the dog has it in him, he'll figure things out. They usually do.

Here's my good boy! He's an 8 month old American Bulldog. He's never missed a hike/kayaking/backpacking trip but unfortunately I don't think he has the nose or the brains for hunting...I planned on using him to flush birds but it might not be in his cards. Adam,
I commend you for taking in a abused dog. I have had one not so good dog and that was my fault. I said it would never happen again. My beagle (the not so good dog) was a great grouse and pheasant dog. He couldn't care less about a rabbit, unless it busted in front of him. My pointers are my life and I swore I would not screw up a pointer. I am very proud of them, but they even have bad days, when they forget why they exist. You must be sure and secure as Jesse is, They are here to hunt, if they do not, they are not much use to me. Be them the best or just decent. Either way they have to work for their vittles. Hope all have a good night. Hitting the rack for an early wake up tomorrow and back to work.

well if your worried about dinner your right chakkar would be better... if your worried about a gun shy dog you dont have to hit the bird just fire when flushed... ive used them small fire crackers bird flies light a fire cracker a bird and loud noise is what your going for.... i wont kill anything just to kill either....

Pulled this post off the pups being born. The pups are about 5 weeks now. Both of them show promise as they both have the same personality and are both even with their aggression, temperment and passive behaviour. No one dominate dog. Both are full of drive and like to run with stuff in their mouths.I think we have a couple of winners here. Just a couple of pics of the kids with the pups. Don't worry Gunner was not injured in this photo, but they were taken when I was at work and I didn't supervise the pictures.
