went out this morning, set up around 5:50. heard alot of gobblin from one gobbler about 150 to 200 yards away. he got down off the roost and i started calling to him. it sounded like he was answering them, just not moving. i made my 5th call probably and there was no answer. so i waited. about 5 minutes later i hear a gobble right infront of me at about 50 yards, if that. made a call. gobbled. gobble gobble gobble. gets to about 20 yards right around the bend and i can here him spittin. pokes his head around the corner and BOOM. get up real fast and run over...... no bird. i didnt even see him fly away or run back down the path. just no bird. :( i cant believe it. i had my opportunity and i wiffed it. im not sure if i jerked the gun or what. the only thing i know is that i missed him. well, goin out tomorrrow, hopping to connect with one then.

Were you able to tell where your shot did hit so you can better judge what did go wrong?

Tough break man, but if it's any consolation, I took a friend hunting this morning also and he missed a jake at 30 yards. Wide open area, no excuse whaat so ever, he just plain missed. :o I guess he pulled the shot up or down or somehow, I was laughing so hard as the bird took off I couldn't even back him up.:D I am the prowd owner of a new shirt tail though. Better luck tomorrow.

thats exactly wat my grandfather said. he was like, "are u sure you werent dreamin all of this?" yes im sure i wasnt dreamin. i got the bruise on my shoulder to tell the tale. and i could not find any marks in the trees or anything where my pellets hit. i did find the wad though. it was right where the turkey was standing. oh by the way, went out again this morning and only heard 6 gobbles and they were all far far away.

Should have gotten on your horse and rode to them birds. If you can hear them gobble they aint too far. Going out on Monday and Tuesday to guide for a guy who ain't never gotten a bird. He's the kind of hunter I like. First legal bird that comes in, he'll shoot it. He just wants his first one. We'll see what happens.

I missed one a few years ago that flew of a roost from pretty far and landed 8 feet away almost hitting my gun barrel....Of course at 8 feet the pattern is the size of a quarter. :D It happens man....
