No geographical hints. I want to know what the beast looks like to everyone before providing the area. ;)

im gonna agree with The Wadd and say a big bob cat with the back ground making it look bigger
George Ackley

A MT lion stride at the smallest would be around 18'' to 34'' and larger, that cat I wouldn't think stride isn't any bigger then about 8 to 10'' and it don't look much taller then 12 to 14'' of the ground ... the ear's also look small for a lion.... and if someone took the photo with a camera my experiences with mountain lion i would have say a lion wouldn't let anything get that close without looking at it. also the torso is way short for a big cat and the coat of the cat in the photo looks to have a couple coloration to it. a lion coat is a constant color I think its called ((twain )). as of it being a lion or cub, this time of year they would be larger.. probably be going around 40 lb by now
Its the right size of a bobcat but the tail would be a little long for a bobcat ,
with the size of the yellow flowers and that cat I would say tabby house cat
but guess what,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,you never know!

It looks like a Cheeta the way the spots are arranged. But with that Pine tree in the background I really have no idea! Plus it's really hard to tell the size of it.
Could it be someones pet?

The picture was taken two years ago. The concensus was that it was either a mountain lion or a very large bobcat.
The tail just doesn't say bobcat to me, though.

A freak of nature bobcat with a tail! I'm actually serious and joking at the same time.
First off did you take this picture? When did you take this picture?
The reason I say this is because it has every characteristic of a bobcat except for the tail. White tipped ears, white on the underside with black spots, and short in stature.
I also wouldn't put it past being a summer time coyote with mange or start of on it's tail (in no way shape or form calling anyone a lier whom swears this is a Mt. Lion from Pa).
Upstate
09-17-2008, 07:40 AM
With that tail it is not a bobcat. I live in NE Pa. I have not personally seen anything looking like a mt. lion, but there has been several sighting by reliable sportsmen in the area. Also the PGC denies that any exist.
BarnesX.308

Also the PGC denies that any exist. That, right there, must mean they do. :D
A neighbor up at our camp took the picture. He isn't making any claims to what he thinks it is because he doesn't want to be labeled a wacko .
He's spent more time in the woods than anyone I know so I would consider him a reliable source.
He could not readily confirm or deny that this was a bobcat. Too big and too long a tail. The hair seems too short and the musculature in the thigh doesn't seem bobcat-like to me.
I see a few bobcats a year up there and something ain't right with this one.

Scott you know there's LIONS up by us!!!!
Not too many people would deny it up there. I remember the old folks that owned Good's Campgrounds were telling us about them when I was a kid in the 1970s.
I've also found a cached deer. Wasn't bear or coyote.

I cut tracks years ago when I was turkey hunting and trout fishing... Went the other way... The thing is, you'd have to kill one before the PGC would admit it and then they would prosecute your ass for killing it.. Lose, Lose!!! Between 13, 57, 66 and Rickett's Glen, plenty of wilderness for them to stay out of the way... The ones in California were not that shy, but they been breathing that smog for years, so they're a little goofy:D i sent you that email.

The cat looks medium sized - 20# to 40#. The plants in the foreground give some perspective. The overall appearance (ears, tail, pelt, size, etc.) point to some kind of exotic pet that escaped or was released. I would guess a cross between a serval and something else.
This kind of incident is becoming more common.

This cat was on the news a while back.
It's proportions are out-sixed house cat. At the time, they couldn't figure out what it was.
I didn't check page 2 to see your answer before I bloviated. Sorry about that.

Aw man an all black phase. I would love to get one of those! They say the red phase that I got is a gene descendent from wolves and i think the black is too. I think.

They say the eastern coyote has wolf blood in it. It bred with wolves as it migrated over from the north and west. I believe it. That is why they are much bigger than those coyotes out west.

Out west,, the western united states is a large place with many different environments
I am not shore I think our coyotes are larger do to the fact of a Wolf blood line, but more do to the fact that are coyotes have adapted to harsher northern claimants,, They evolved to suit there environment,
North eastern coyotes live in much colder claimants then their south western and even there southeastern cousins , from the coyotes I have harvested in the northeastern part of the country I feel they run about the same size as any coyote that lives or i have taken in the northern part of the country,, most northern coyotes come in at a average of 28 to 38 lb,,, with some over 40 and even a couple topping out a little over 50 each year..but that's common through out northern states,,,same as deer the farther north you go the bigger they scale in at, starting with the white tail key deer of southern Florida, that tops out at about 85 lb, to the monsters roaming the woods of Midwestern Canada......
I am not a expert on coyotes ,,, this is just what i have seen with coyote i have taken

Back in the late 1990s, I was at the weigh-in at the local coyote tourny they have upstate. There was a 68 pounder weighed in. That's a huge yodel-dog!!!!
What do you think this sucker weighed? I was thinking around 50lb but never weighed it.

Was it mosquito creek?
I agree on feline but not mt. lion. not Ocelot or exotic. I'll go with a tabby with it's head down in front of a stump. Bit I can't figure the spots on the inside rear legs. The answer will be interesting.

AceArcher,
No sarcasm here:). Just would submit to an individual that made it a course of study. As I wish some would do when they bash Law Enforcement, but I digress. We got a ton of those dogs in Rickett's Glen.. It seems that I always have something else to hunt when I'm up there..

North Mountain Fire Company. Near Benton, PA.
It's not a house cat. If it ain't a lion, it's s giant bobcat. What's with the long tail, though.
Actually, I've never seen a house cat up there. I doubt they'd survive a day outside the house. :D

Waaaaay too big to be a house cat....short black ears? Long bushy tail? I have no idea what it is, but prolly not a house cat.... I know there is a serious black market for lions, tigers, and other exotic cats...You can get baby tigers for as lil' as 300 bucks....There are over 7,000 "captive" tigers and lions and fancy cats in the USA owned by private citizens, only 150-250 kept by zoo's and trained handlers.... Thats a lot of serious pussy running around... I would imagine that people let them go and they get loose all on there own....It could be anything :huh:

Scott,
I have a friend with a camp in Perry County who took a great pic of a lion outside of their camp about six years ago, I'll try to get a copy. You hear so many accounts of lions upstate, there has to be validity to them, but I question them being wild lions as opposed to escapees from captivity somewhere.
I picked up a roadkill coyote on Welsh Rd in Maple Glen about ten years ago and took it to Don Marin...on the phone on my way there, Don kept saying, are you sure its not a German Sheppard? :D He almost fell over when he saw it- it weighed 47 lbs, nice doggie for Montco. He did a full body mount and uses it in exibitions & loans it to museums. Here's a stupid question- why does the Pa. Game Commission charge you $50 if you want to keep a road kill coyote, but you can shoot one legally anytime with any weapon for free with your license???? Next time I poke an arrow hole in mine
Here's a pic of another Montgomery County dog- this one lived in Oreland, saw her in the same field many times ,always assumed she had pups nearby, but never saw them.

I didn't know they did that. Hmmm. Might have to go with the "don't ask, don't tell" policy if I hit one. :D
I know they charge $10 a point if you hit a buck. That's silly. They say it's their property. Well then keep it on a leash or pay for my car to be repaired!!!!! ;)
Locals up there have been talking about lions since the 1970s. Could it be that there are a couple breeding pairs that weren't wiped out up there?

It's a large housecat or an exotic that got loose. Either way trap that sob and then you'll know for sure what it is. Cause you know its raising hell with the small game and upland bird populations.
