Does bad weather have anything to do with turkeys and thier movements?
I was out today and heard some hens, But no gobbles.... Should you expect a return call from the toms? I was getting yelps and clucks back to my calls, but these birds were a few hundred yards away and I just couldnt bring them in
Hopefully tommorow

From personal experience I'd say they move into fields more under bad weather. Also, during high winds I notice they shut up more.

I agree in bad weather they like fields. I hunt in bad weather every chance I get because if your out there when it clears up it is some of the best hunting.

Two years ago in McKean County, we were out in bad weather and didn't hear a sound. We were convinced there were no gobblers in the area. Eventually, a thunderstorm came through the area and the thunder turned the birds on like it was a switch. There were gobblers all over the area. The following day they were gobbling real good and we killed 2 nice birds. Hard to predict these guys!!!!!

The weather dictates a Turkeys life alot.In rainy weather i try to get as close as possble to there roost site. With the wet ground this can be achieved just go in early. You have the best shot at that bird as soon as he flys down. After that the hens will push him into a field and the will constantly drag him further away.Saturday morning should be an awesome morning probably the best so far this year.G week guys should be in for a real treat,HRL:thup:

In rain they prefer fields because predators have the advantage in the noisey woods, they use eye sight to protect themselves in the field.
The cold damp weather has shut them down alot, look for a prime couple of days coming up. Just hope that the season isn't to rainy because it hurts the eggs and produces less birds for next year.

Todays weather was ok.... Icey in the morning though... But, I didnt even hear a bird today... Im hunting a hardwood grove 40 yards inside of a HUGE farm grass field...
Tommorow is my last day till the last two weeks of the season, hopefully this nicer weather does something for me

This is a very old post but is very educational. Turkeys don't gobble in the rain. The hens will talk a little to let that gobbler know where they are. This day you have a very good chance of him walking right on in to you. I have had it happen several times.
As for thunder and lightning its called dominance. Those big old toms try and impress the lady's as much as possible. Where I was last year there was a lot of dump trucks off in the distance. So once they dumped and the Gaye slammed the truck the birds went off!! It lasted a while cause once one started they all started then they all shock gobbled!! It was just awesome!! The whole woods would shake.
I hope this answers some questions. This is a very good topic that is not covered much and is very help full
Good luck this year
