What calls do you guys prefer? I have a few box calls, but Im looking to expand my arsenal, I'm open to anything as long as its user friendly (this is my first year turkey hunting and im not that experienced in calling turkeys) A slate, box, or mouth reed calls? what brands have worked for you and are easy to use and sound good?

I don't consider myself a talented turkey caller but I have found I can make the best turkey talk using the slate calls with various types of strikers to change up the tone/sound.

I use 'em all. I've found that birds in different areas like different calls. Best thing you can do is get used to a mouth call. They're versatile and are great for those last few yards, especially if you hunt alone.

i like a slate call i have one with three pieces it has slate plastic and aluminum so you can get different pitches in one call... a mouth call is probably best you can have both hands on gun and minimal movement

I've killed or "guided" around 100 long beards to their death and never used anything but a mouth call. I carry 3 of them, nothing else, and only use a decoy for bow hunting. Try a 3 reed diamond cutter, a bat cut and a double reed V cut. The Shane Hendershot call he used to win the 2008 championship is awesome. He is friends with a buddy of ours in Ohio and he gave us a few before last season. He is now on with Zink calls and they are pricey. If I work a bird for an hour and he won't come a gobble call will seal the deal.

I generally will use a diamond cut all season and will replace it about mid season because it becomes to "broken in".

if you gag on a mouth call dont use them. I live in delaware and that was one thing they preached in class. i use the primos a frame series dlouble reed bat cut. then i use a woodhaven slate. im not an expert but it works and calls them thunderchickens in.

Are there special types of calls you wanna use in the spring? Such as a hen call? Or are you trying to make a male gobble call, as to bring them in to fight over hens? I'm completely new to this turkey hunting, and I am trying to soak up as many tips as possible

hey bluecollar$ what type of gobble call do you use. I have seen the shake models. What makes the longbeard commit to the gobble call? Does he come in to investigate the gobbling after all the hen calling? Sounds like an awesome tactic and I'm curious to learn how you use it because we have all had a longbeard that wouldnt come in and an extra trick up your sleeve never hurts!!

Cant find a diamond cut. 12 bucks for a zinks hendershot. Picked up a primos dome double to mess around with, they are not all that hard to ise at all

Be careful when and where you are gobbling. You may get snuck up on.

Primos makes a diamond cutter but almost every company makes a 3 reed call cut like this:

I can't use any of those "dome" style calls, for a new guy I would say grab a 2 reed call and practice. You may think its easy and you sound good in the truck but wait until a tom gobbles 50 yards away from the roost and you have to break the silence with a few soft yelps:D

The gobble we use is a primos it can shaken or "pumped" which I think sounds better.

I think after a bird hangs up for a LONG time they know something isn't right. I will generally shut down wait 20 mins or so and move around the bird. I will set up,hen call then gobble to make him think the hen moved off with another bird. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't:D

Try them all- Their all fun to know how to use. A tube is cool to use and makes a great gobble with practice and every turkey hunter should know how to use a wing bone, For the woods the Primos true double or Deadly doubles a stack frame and easy to blow with no reeds sticking. The deadly double is high pitch and raspy, great for cutting and locating but easy to turn down when working close and reeds don't stick when nervous just before show down

Where in South Jersy is a good place to buy turkey call? Dick's has a very limited supply and each store has less.

I just use a slate call it is easy to use and you can make diffrent sounds and realistic sounding.
