Definitely panning on it UB. Pulling the reds out of deep freeze when I get off tomorrrow am. But, unless something unexpected comes up, I'll be there Sunday AM.

mostly upland??? knee highs ok or waders better???

knee highs.
since your coming down i will make the line a little longer. but we have to pull them. i just don't have the time to check a large line during the week.
with the rain and sleat coming i don't know how much critter movement we will have, but we'll give it hell anyways.
may run a short water line for ya too, depends how much sign is there. still knee highs for you. i may need hips.
i'll show you how to set snares, a few ways to support them, anchoring, and a little on location.
the coni's, i'm not sure what pond i'm setting yet. but it's all bank den sets and small channel sets. i'm 20 minutes from tidal, but 50 yards from water ways.
i'll pull out extra coon bait tonight, i'm thinking freezer burnt drum and old shedder crabs. ;) we need a loud bait for a one night set, and the rain would kill marshmellows. you handle the skunks.

Funny you mention crabs...with those reds in a freezer at my mother-in-laws I found a couple gallon ziploc bags with cleaned crab halves. gotta be two or three years old. Wife's family never got around to eating them. All yours if you want. Other wise, they're history.

and thanks for opportunity with the skunks...
keep the .22....how would a .45 with hollow point do? I'll dispatch---you clean!!:D

toss the crabs, i've got enough bait. i'm only running another week.
coons are or will start to rub, reds are rubbed.
greys and rats are good, but i've had enough.

.45 is a good dispatch gun, but not fur friendly.
you may laugh at skunks, but $6 pelt, $15 oz for the juice. lots of money in stink. not enough for me to mess with though. i like being aloud in the house at night.

see you at 9am

On second thought....I'll take the skunks head on with a dull knife...if that'll keep me out of the... ohh never mind.

see you at nine.

river rat, was wondering if you moved out west yet. i was talkin to ron today, he hasn't had a bad coon yet, like me. i've been getting some nice ones, pulling some down to 34"-36". but we seem to be catching all males. he's doing rats now, the glands are worth more to him then the pelts. he didn't say how the fur looked. i haven't hit rats in weeks. may do a few sets just for sunday.
i got rid of my round freezer, been putting everything up. all my meats are out back in the swamp. after yotes now, with coon sets to pay for gas. those dogs are tough. here today, back in two weeks for one night, gone for three weeks. that and 50 deer per square mile keep me resetting every day.
you have any reds over there? we have next to none. saw one dead on 55, that was the first since buck week. the last three years they have died off the second week of december. the yotes aren't helping either.
not sure if chris even ran a mink line this year. haven't talked to him in a while.
any word on what tommy's buying coon for? i haven't sold anything but a few kits, black and brown, to upbowhunter for fly tying.

the extra sets are in.
cages for coon.
a few snares for coon.
coni's for rats and a few for mink.
plus the line i already had for coon and yotes.
everything was baited fresh and some snares were lured.
i hope the snotty weather hold off for the critters at night fall. with the cold front coming they should be up and moving right at dark, to beat the wet weather.
hope i have something to show for the work and you driving down here.

Sounds good UB. I appreciate the extra trouble. The raccoon have definitely been on the move up here the last couple weeks too, and with the weather i'm sure you're right about the movement early tonight. Forecast is a little fun for tomorrow, but more so later in the day into the night. I think we're gonna see plenty snow up here then..

Joe I am hearing $5-$8 for Coons and $3-$4 for Rats.I need to get Rons Phone # from you I have a Mason jar of Glands for him.I have seen a few Rubbed coons ,but most are really nice.I have over 100 caught as of this morning.Me and the Boy are well over 700 Rats.We still have some nice pockets of Reds over here.Definately not like they used to be.I caught a few.And for the Yotes well all i can say is they are like nomads. They are here for a day or two then gone for 2 weeks. We just dont have em like Cumberland County does.We got a few Mink this year in the 110's.And I caught a Weasel in a Mink Snare.Im setting one last Rat line this weekend then its done for me.I have had a hell of a year.I wanted to go out with a bang.Im gonna miss the Tidal Rats the most.I will be back next year for the opener hopefully.Im leaving my 14ft PolarKraft at my Dads in Bridgeport.Im hoping on being moved by July.I already have my House out there I just need to sell mine here,HRL:)

$5-$8 for put up sucks. what i'm seeing on other forums is a $12 ave, put up.
the rat prices are good.
tommy's kin that traps over your way will be glad to see you go.:D
your seeing the same yote patterns we have around me. tough critters to get.
chris's dad had a weasel back in the foothold days, in a 110. your only the second guy that i know of that caught one. but guys don't talk weasels much.
good luck selling the house. keep on here and give us some end of the line pictures.
take some western pictures for us, i'll put up some salty striper pictures for you, so you can get a little home sick.

Hey UB, this might sound stupid, but Im not a trapper. What exactly is a weasel? Is weasel another name for some other type of critter?

ub1243
03-06-2009, 12:59 PM
weasel is a weasel
up north they turn white for the winter, they are sold as ermine.

weasel family is otter, mink, and the couple different weasels.i think the skunk was in the weasel family, they recently removed them. they are now their own family of critters.

swab1985
03-06-2009, 08:05 PM
So in the weasel family, there is the weasel, mink, otter. What about nutria, or is that the same or something else. I ve been thinking about getting into trapping, I just have no idea about the whats wheres and whens of it. What about fishers?

swab1985
03-06-2009, 08:12 PM
So I just googled weasels. They look just like I expected, Almost identical to ferrets, they arent the same are they?

ub1243
03-07-2009, 10:36 AM
ferrets are in the family, not sure about fishers, they have the same body types. not sure about pine martens, badgers or wolverines. have to look it up.
nutria, thats a strange south american varmit. the females have the nipples on their backs so they can feed while swimming. anything with nipples on the back, is just plain strange to me. :D
