I went out today to one of my old hunting spots and look what I found! no BS this was one of the smallest rubs! I counted all together 9 rubs not counting the ones I probably missed. So I setup my portable stand and climbing stick, and unloaded 3 bags of sugarbeats. I'm curious to see how big this buck is! Wish me luck

I used to really get pumped when I saw rubs just like that. Then I saw some yearlings ripping the cedar bark and eating eat:eek: I think some are rubs and some are hungry deer.. I hope yours is a monster.

Exactly!!!!! The biggest bucks rub the earliest. If I had seen that rub I would have done everthing to get out of there quikly and not leave any scent or sign a man has been around. Scout it miday so you dont disturb him. Once you figure out where he s coming and going only hunt him when the wind is perfect. Ive arived at my best spots only to get back in the truck and leave because the wind wasnt perfect.

I hunt a couple of places where I can eventually count on seeing a nice deer, and I wont hunt bait when I've got sign of a good deer. You've got that many rubs this early, you're probably in a core travel area for that deer. Why dump bait when you know that deer is there and there often?? Baiting is legal and it has it's place..I just wouldnt become so reliant upon it that you actually run the risk of hurting your place.

Got my doe Monday evening over my bait pile,so it's time to hunt for horns. I have been out every day so far and haven't seen him yet, maybe it's this moon phaze that is making him run a little off his normal schedule. Wish me luck

The mistake you might be making is your out every day on this buck. Big bucks have made it through 2 or 3 deer seasons without getting tagged. They are the ones that dont take well to hunting preasure, scents, and changes to their home turf. If you realy want a shot at this buck? Walk away from that spot and dont come back for awhile. I wouold wait at least a week although it might be wiser to wait till the third ot fourth week of October. Only hunt that stand once a week when the conditions are perfect for enterig the area scent and sound free.
Large bucks should be considered a different species than does and 18 month old bucks.
Everytime you enter the area he knows you have been there. I dont care if you wear knee high rubber boots (which you should be wearing) Older bucks pick up your scent.
I was hunting a very high stand (shotgun) a few years ago. It was about 1pm and I had been in the stand all day since dark. Two does came through and when they hit my trail that I came in in the morning the picked up my scent. Now I had been religous about keeping my hunting clothes including my knee highs in a bag full of pine branches. My boot were only put on when I reached my parking spot and I would take them off back at the truck before driving home. Yet this doe picked up my scent that was 7 hours old. Never underestimate a deers nose. Big old bucks seem to have a sixth sense that other deer dont have and need to be hunted xtra carefull.

Yea I'm not gonna go out there for a week or so now that I killed my doe. I will hunt one of my other stands and see if I get lucky out there. It is public land so the chances of this big buck hanging around might not be too good the longer the season go's on, so I need to get it done asap! I will be patient

I read an article before that said dont get too excited and hang a stand over a scrape or a rub...Most of these are hit overnight and not during daylight hours...They say to try to hunt a trail that they may be using to get to that area...

Thank you Bowhunter!
I look at it this way, I will watch every single move that I make while I am in his domain. Eventually he will be the one who will make a mistake and I will hang him on my wall with the others.
