Technically my 13 week American Bulldog pup "Mako" is a hunting breed, they use them as catch dogs for hogs down south :) I want to train him to hunt birds. Retrieving is obviously out of the question, but I see no reason why he can't be taught to find a bird and flush it...
Would love to hear from others who successfully trained "non-hunters" to hunt! Maybe direct me to a book or other resource or just give me some tips.
Thanks!

hunting is instinct for dogs... if his instinct is hogs train him to hunt hogs ... it will work out better ... if you really want him to hunt birds my guess is you have to have him on lots of them to get him to figure out thats what hes looking for.... id just get a bird dog

Thanks! Mako is very intelligent but he's the most strong-willed pup I've ever seen. He's going to be a big boy! Right now he's 36 lbs at 13 1/2 weeks. All aspects of training will be a little tougher with him...so I'm prepared to do what it takes to put him to work. Every dog needs a job. And there's no sense in training him to hunt hogs while I live in NJ ;)

Don't know if you know it but wild hogs are on the increase
in south jersey............I know some owners of golf courses that would
be glad to see their demise because of what they do to the turf....
