Just curious to see everyones style of hunting. Do you prefer to sit and wait in feeding areas and strut zones or do you prefer to run and gun?? And what style do you use on public land and private?

I only hunt from a stand on state and private. Cant beat the quiet and the feeling you get when you hear a branch break or leaves crunch. Cant really say much for drivung deer because I never did it. Dont really want too. Not my type of hunting.

Hunt private property: Wonder around a bit, call a bit, hear the big gobble, call a bit...WAIT a bit...THEN.... :shoot:

I try to locate the birds the night before and then set up with in 150 yards and get them to gobble and call as needed, sometimes you have to move to relocate them,i always hunt from a tree that will help me blend in

Try to locate one either the night before or early in the morning with an owl hooter. Then set up within 75-100 yds. If no joy, I like to start moving and calling around 0900.

I thought you were talking Deer not Turkey

My game plan is always the same year after year. There is a thick Forest of evergreens to the south and west of an old deer stand I had. Every year deer hunting I would see turkeys and by gosh for the last 10 years those suckers roost in the same set of pines year after year. They may be a bit further back or over the saddle side of the mountain but they are always there.
No scouting required (although i do scout a ton ) One year those bastards are going to fool me but so far so good.

Makoman has the right approach! Better yet WITHOUT calling try to find at least if their are turkeys even in the area! This takes some scouting of coarse. Its all about locating them.Look for droppings and fresh scratchings.
I found that if one was responding to my calls but never came in or faded away I stick it out. I have had 2 turkey's come within 80 yards or so and wander off. One I waited and called for21/2 hours and he showed back up up hot and heavy. The other one took about 1 hour and came back.

Good Luck

Pattern your birds now and know their whereabouts, habits and roosting areas. Stay out of the woods in March and whatever you do, don't practice your calling in March in the same areas/places you intend to hunt. They can get wise to you and will be shut-mouthed later on. Sometimes you have to change your tactics to adapt to the birds'.

Sorry I also thought you where talking about deer. Turkey hunting is a sit and call game. Stalking turkeys is not allowed during the spring season.

I prefer just like makoman the nite before or very early in the am method.
If I don't get the located gobbler to come in or if he doesn't sound interested, then I'll leave him for another time and mood.

Then walk the ridges wearing out the crow call with an occassional few yelps here and there.
