Hey guys.
I just took the hunter safety course this past year and I am looking forward to my first trip.
I really like the idea of turkey hunting and like the way it looks on TV ( I realize it's not as easy as it looks on TV though)
Any tips you can give a first timer?
Thanks
Joe

Joe,
I would buy video's and CD's from Primos, HS Strut and all those other company's. They have a lot of beginner series. Buy a slate call, boxcall, pushbutton and a mouth call. The mouth call will be the hardest to use, so practice now. If your only able to make one call make it the yelp. Start studying the audio/video's you buy. Know the difference between a yelp, cackle, purr, and putt.

I'll keep you in mind when I'm ready to get out.
How did you finish the season off this summer?
Thanks for the insight Doug.
I did buy a mouth call this summer and have practiced pretty frequently but am by no means a turket caller

R401K,
I think the best piece of advice I can give a new turkey hunter is be patient. When you think your going to get up and relocate stay still for another half hour. Even if you think that bird stopped coming in just sit and wait. Also, don't over call. Take it easy. Remember, in nature the hen is really going to the gobbler. Your trying to reverse the role. Above all be safe.

Thanks ACE.
I have heard from my uncles that it is a waiting game but it pays off when you get that bird.

Yeah no problem man. It took me a while to get my first bird. My first was 21 1/2lbs, 9 3/4" beard (thick paint brush beard) 1 1/8" spurs. Still my best bird yet. He came in completely silent. I just heard a twigg snapp 20yds inback of me and I guned it hoping for the best. Well, I got em. You never know when they're gonna come in man just keep on keeping on. Not every hunt is like the tv shows. Birds gobbling all over the place. They make it look like you just make any turkey noise at them and they come running in. Nah False! LOL a lot harder than that.

This the best advice and most blow the setup by getting up to soon, you'll learn fast after you get up and see them running away:D
Remember its hard enough to get a bird to respond, don't give up to soon because you might not get another bird to work that day.

Turkey hunting can be some of the most dangerous if you hunt public land. The loads are heavy and shot at low level - not like birds in the air. Some yahoos on public land will shoot at anything. Be careful if you use decoys and don't carry a dead turkey unless you cover it with something ot have a hunter orange on.
Lean against a wide tree - not only will this conceal your outline from the front, it will protect you from behind.
