I don't have a 541-S, but have the precursor to it, the 581-S. I've had it since 1968. I had a old Weaver 3/4" tubed scope on mine and shot thousands of rounds through it. About 25 years ago I refinished the stock, glass-bedded it (practicing for bigger things), lightened the trigger pull, and mounted some sling swivel studs. I then mounted a 1" Weaver Wide-View 4X scope in some 1" Redfield tip-off rings on it. The only part I've had to replace on the rifle in all these years was a firing pin about twenty years ago.
I even have the old hang tag for it somewhere. For the money, these had great crisp triggers, and accuracy is exceptional. It's not a Winchester 52, but it's a sweet inexpensive rifle.

Correction, mine is just the "581", no "S". I always wanted a Rem M591 (which shot the 5MM Remington) back then. Guess I'm glad I never got one.

I've got a 540-XR "or something like that". It's a shortened version of a smallbore target rifle. This is the series with the lugs on the back of the bolt, right? Supposedly a very accurate rifle with ammo it likes. I always liked the looks of the sporter too. I haven't had this one out of the safe in over a decade. Maybe I should bust it out and shoot it a little this year.
