I shot a doe during the extended shotgun season with a Lightfield slug and i'm not sure what to think of them. I shot this deer at 20 yards, the slug went thru her shoulder, passed thru her heart and lodged under the hide on the opposite side.( No pass through:eek:  ) The deer dropped after only running 30 yards but I didn't have any blood trail. Not that this was a problem since I saw her drop but i'm not impressed with the performance of these slugs. Anyone else have any issues with no pass throughs or anything else with these slugs.

PS. I also found the wad lodged in the ribcage on the opposite side of the entry wound

I was upset on a guided deer hunt in south carolina that my 30\30 did the same thing. (no pass thru) Then the guide told me that is what you want. You want all the kenitic energy to be absorbed by the animal dispatching them fast. I have had double lung hit deer run 100 yards when hit with 12 gauge barnes expanders same size hole on both sides they never expanded..I now use buck shot in a well patterned gun and just drop them where they stand.

I have taken alot of deer with lightfields and found the slug in the deer. They usually flatten out to the size of a half a dollar.I have never seen any otherslug expand as wide as they do.A couple of times on close shots I have found the wad inside the deer. Not having a exit hole with them does not bother me because the farthest I have had one go is about 20 yards. Most of them went straight down. The shop down the road sells more lightfields than all other slugs combined .Somebody must like them.

When i shoot slugs I only use lightfield exp sabots all lead and expand every time.. put one in the skull of a doe at 45 yards, butcher sent the slug back to me with the packaged meat...

I'm not saying the slug didn't do it's job because it had great expansion:thup: and dropped the doe before she made 30 yards. I'm just worried about not having a good blood trail to follow if the animal runs out of sight. The slug did produce a lot of damage to the vitals but what happens with a not so perfect hit.

I shot a 8point during permit shotgun a week ago with my 20g H&R and lightfield slug...had hair but no blood...went back and looked the next day and found nothing....Tonight I shot this buck with the archery tackle....I swore I must have grazed him but this slug went right behind the shoulder!!!!!!!!!!! I cant believe it didnt fall over!!!!!!!! This buck was still alive with a green slime and a messed up shoulder...Man they are tough animals....At least he isnt suffering anymore..didnt look like he was going to make it through the winter...

20 yards is close, supposedly they dont reach supersonic speed until about 50 yards, apparantly thats why your supposed to sight your gun in at least a 50 yard distance. iam willing to bet that if she was out there a little more it would have passed through. actually your sabot didnt even get the chance to fall away from the slug. if you notice at the range its right around that 20 yard mark that you find your sabots on the ground. and as stated above she took all the energy, and thats what you want. sometimes the blood in the chest cavity has to reach the height of the hole to actually spill blood. i hit a deer once broadside at about 30 yards with 000 buckshot. all through the top of his shoulder, he crumpled right in his tracks. but each buckshot hole only had the faintest trickle of blood. if you would have hit her about 1/4-1/3 of the way up, looking broadside i bet she would have spewd pretty good.

I have never shot the 20ga Lightfields but I had a bad experience with the 3" 12ga slugs a few years back.

I had been shooting the Lightfield 2 3/4" slugs without a hitch. I tried the 3" and shot two deer at less then 50 yards. I found both deer but the slug flattened out to 4" diameter where they went in. They broke apart and I could only find little pieces in the other ribcage. I think the alloy was too soft for the velocity at the close range.

I have switched to the Winchester Supreme 2 3/4" and never looked back. They fly flatter and penetration is not an issue. While I agree it is good to have most of the energy transfered to the target I would rather have a good slug mushroom and pass through the animal.

I had the same problem with 20 ga Coppersolids and Lightfields at close range. I also had tumblers with both slugs while sighting them in. I switched to Buckhammers and shoulder shots. My buddy dropped an eight in it's tracks at ten yards with an Encore and I dropped a 4 pt in it's tracks at 30 yards with my Mossberg 500 pump, both with 20 ga Buckhammers. I have yet to have any tumblers with Buckhammers, only perfectly round punch outs. Both slugs went through the animals. I would not be surprised to find sabots inside a deer that was shot at 20 yards. We sight in at 50 yards and have found sabots from all makes of slugs at the target, although most are found around 20-25 yards from the bench.

I use 2 3/4 lightfields in my 12 gauge slug gun. I have killed deer with it from 20 to 160 yards. The deer I shot out to 50 yards with a broadside shot ran the furthest. I still use them though, I shoot a 1 inch group at a 100 yards.
