I'm using the weather break tomorrow to get my 6mm Rem sighted in and ready for 'hog season. It's been 'semi-retired' for eight years because it makes too much noise for the locals in Jersey. I have a good spot in PA now and can't wait 'til spring and 'stretching' the barrel. Lord I love hunting those critters!
My Jersey 'hog guns are a 17HMR and a 22RF.
When I first moved to Jersey [25 yrs ago] there were no 'hogs. Now they are all over the place. The biggest hinderance is all the houses, safety zones and local police who don't know the game laws. I had 7 of them get real excited awhile back when they got a report of a man along the road with a rifle [me]. Now that was really interesting.
Anybody else getting ready?

BuckHammer,
I'm trying to get my components for .223 for my pet load in Savage 10FP, but all the joints on line are sold out. I hope they get their stuff back in stock. I love Chuck hunting, but if you can't wait till they peak their little heads out, I enjoy Yote hunting come March. They still have their winter fur and the temps are a bit better than Jan and Feb. Take it easy on the COPS, u'd be a bit hinky too if you were going to a call with a man with a gun! Vests don't stop "Chuck Guns".

When you find your components for the 223 you might want to stock up. I'm laying in components for mine that should last 4-8 years 'just in case'.
Jersey has a two week permit Yote season. PA has a better idea on how to handle Yotes. I envy you that flexibility. Maybe I can get back to PA soon.

See above. I loved it when I lived in PA. Jersey is sooooo flat It's hard to see beyond 100-200 yards. When I lived in Butler I could go out on the strip mines and shoot waaayyyy out there. Perhaps you would take pity on a transplant and show him how to take a Yote.

I can get you started on 'hogs. Once you find a place, it's easy. Now is the time to start looking for farms/'hog populations and getting written permission. If the Zone 51 area is like conditions near Zone 25/26, it may take awhile. Farmers prefer not to be bothered once spring hits. Send me a PM and we'll give it a go.

i just ordered a .17hmr-savage
also got a bipod coming for it.
i'm looking forward to hog season. they were out and about last weekend.
down by me it's very flat. thats why i'm getting the little pea shooter.
i normally just take the bow and stalk them.
but i need a new toy.

can you use rifles in nj? i was thinking of getting a 204 ruger

for woodchucks, you are limited to gr. if over i think .25
so i could use my .300wsm if i load it down, and wanted the cops called everytime the earth shook.
thats why i'm getting the little .17hmr
and .22 shorts for dispatching trapped animals
you need to take the rifle permit class, the one for .22, rifles and muzzle loaders.

H&R - Any rifle/load if below .25 cal. If .25 and larger the bullet can't be over 100 grains. The 204 Ruger is a dandy. Shoots with the 6mm/55 Nosler out to 400+ yards.
Setterman - I used to shoot Sierra 75 HPs, but now I'm using the Nosler 55 BT at 4,050 fps. Shoots like a frozen rope and does not 'bounce'.
rebel78 - I have found 'hogs to be a nice segway to deer. I have also found that some farmers will let you in for 'hogs and become somewhat anti-social if you ask about deer later on. One of my guys approaced me about deer after I did not mention them after three years on his 'hogs. When he asked, I said, 'you told me never to ask about deer - I took you at your word'. It's something to pay attention to for sure. I make notes on my permission slips so I don't step on any toes. I've actually given some of them intel on where to find deer on their farms from hunting 'hogs.

rebel78 - I forgot to ask, did you get your 17M2 conversion from E. Arthur Brown Company? It's the only one I've seen on the market.
