Hey fellow Barners,
I have been kicking this idea of a pheasant hunt around for the last few weeks. I was hoping it would serve several purposes for our small (growing) hunting community.
1. We can get to meet each other and put faces to the names.
2. We can introduce some new or young hunters to pheasant hunting.
3 We can enjoy some late season pheasant hunting together for a reasonable price.
I have been talking with Game Creek in Woodstown about what we may be able to do. They were quite accomodating and worked out a pretty sweet deal for a full day of pheasant hunting. This event will be for a group of 16 hunters. If we have a good response we can double that number and split into two groups.
In the AM there will be a European style pheasant shoot. This is not a tower shoot. More like pass shooting birds coming through the treetops. This will be an 80 bird shoot. Then break for lunch.
Game Creek will be providing a sit down lunch for us in the clubhouse.
In the PM we will break into groups of 4 for the afternoon hunt. You can use your own dog or you can use a guide and dog provided by Game Creek for $50.00 (+tip). The groups will go out and hunt over the dogs for 4 stocked birds per hunter. Each group of four will be in a different field.
All you will need is:
NJ Hunting license, (No stamp needed on semi wild preserves)
Proper hunter orange garments
Gun and plenty of shells
$175.00
This is a special price for this event that is usually reserved for members. A full day of hunting with a lunch included at a private hunting preserve for $175.00 is a great price gang. The price is set per hunter. If you have a young hunter and don't care to shoot. You just pay for one hunter.
This is a perfect way to introduce a young or new hunter to this sport. Plenty of birds, no hastles of the WMA's, good cover for the birds, good dogs, and of course the memories that will last a lifetime. You can even get cleaned birds to take home for a small cleaning fee.
The first 16 people to contact me are in. If there is a big response I will form two groups and they will just flip flop the am / pm hunts. One group in the fields while the other is doing the euro shoot then switch after lunch. Game Creek is holding the date (2/28) for me so I need to let them know ASAP how many people will be attending.
If you have a foursome let me know and we will keep you together. If you have your own dog that is great. Let me know if you need a professional guide and dog. I'll make sure it is set up for you.
I'm sure some of you will have questions or suggestions. Post them here and I'll get back to you.
Don't jerk me around! If you KNOW you are in then tell me. I'll confirm your spot and count you in. Don't back out at the last minute and leave me hanging. I'd like to see BB members and thier family first on the list.
I hope to hear from you soon

Here is a pic of my boys yesterday at Game Creek. What a great day. Light snow, mild temps and birds all over the place. http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k421/briantoal/DSC01163.jpg

BTW. If you wanted to change up on the field hunt they will put chuckar and / or quail out there. I just figured pheasants were better for the newer hunters. Those quail can get you spun around quick. The pheasants are safer for the hunters and the dogs. If you have an experienced group and want a change let me know

Unsure if im in at ths point but have some questions. have to check work schedule.
With the European shoot is there a limit on how many one person can shoot?
for example if i shoot 5 birds do i have to stop?
Do they have guys/dogs who pick up the downed birds on the european shoot. Figure we have to stay in place once the shoot starts.
What if someone doesnt want to do the afternoon hunt for the 4 birds(not me). Discounted price? someone take her/his place for a price?
Suggestion: when all said and done all birds divided among Hunters so everyone takes home an equal share of good eating.
Good thing your doing here.

Nick, generally on a Euro or tower shoot you rotate locations and everyone does what they can to kill all 80 birds. If oyu have good guns you can kill a large percentage. The birds will fly with the wind so you won't get great shooting at each station, evening out the opportunities. So no, you don't have to stop at 5 or any other number. There will be 5 guys shooting at 1 bird...
The birds are generally retrieved either by preserve dogs or volunteers. I haev done this many times and even if I can't shoot this one due to budget I will gladly bring the pup over her let her do the work for you guys if john doesn't mind.
As for birds there are usually more than people really want when they split them up at the end.
These things are a fun time as long as everyone is concious of safety. John runs a nice safe place from what I am told although I never shot pheasants except at Bent Creek or M&M so I don't know personally.
the rest I'll leave alone.

I'll try to answer your questions the best I can here.
For the euro shoot I think they will have us rotating stations so everyone gets plenty of shooting in. You can shoot as many birds as you can hit. We'll divide up the birds equally after that shoot I guess.
For the afternoon hunt I imagine some people will be out there longer than others so it may be more difficult to divide those birds shot in the afternoon. Some folks may want to stay out there till sunset while others may be a little tuckered out.
I'm sure everyone will have birds to take home. Maybe more than some guys want to take home.
As far as splitting the day up for a reduced price. I'm not sure how or if that would work. Unless maybe someone brought a youth hunter and decided to let them hunt the morning and the adult hunted the afternoon.
The way I see it they are already closing the place for other (regular) hunts for the day. I would feel a little awkward asking them for a further discount.

Oh. I almost forgot. They will have dogs there to retreive the downed birds. You can use your own too.

does he have to close the whole place or just a couple of fields? I think John has enough land to accomodate this and still do his regular days hunting, not that it's all that relevant really...
but I agree, if I were organizing it would be all or nothing, no splitting it up, too complicated...

I agree 100% no further discount is needed. I was just asking.
For safety reasons i think it would better to just have pheasants put out in the fields. its been my experience quail and chukars tend to level off a lot lower than pheasant. I've been "smacked" before b/c of over zealous hunters tryin to beat other hunters to a bird. I havent been on a WMA on a Opening day, Thangsgiving, Saturday since.....
THIS hunt sounds like a great time.

Brian, you can count me in for the pheasentfest 09'. That is going to be a fun day. Shooting, eatin, and shooting. If anyone is worried about having equal shares of bird to take home, they can have mine, there will be plenty birds dropping in my zone of fire, and I am going to have a blast! Game Creek is the best!, You most certainly get your moneys worth.

I'd be happy to work my dogs for this at no charge. As long as I don't need to get a NJ license to run my dogs on a preserve. If you can find that out, I'd be all about coming out to help out someone without dogs and is bringing the kids out on a hunt. :DLet me know.

Dump Daddy,
I hear a lot of bragging about birds dropping in your zone of fire. Lucky for you they are bigger than the skeet you seem to have such a problem hitting. We'll see what happens on the 28th. Hee Hee
BTW. Any others in your party? See you on brisket Tuesday

Hey gang,
Here is the last call for the pheasantfest. I need the final headcount to by tomorrow morning.
It's a good deal on a full day of pheasant hunting and a meal incuded. This is a great way to introduce a new shooter or feel free to bring a non shooter (at no charge) to see what it's all about. A lot of people showed interest but haven't made a firm commitment yet.

I had saved a few spots for guys who gave me "may have a few guys". I need to confirm those spots or I'm gonna fill them with others who want to go. I have a standby list of guys wanting to go.
The start time will be 9:00. Feel free to get there a bit early and have a cup of coffee and say hi. We'll be doing a quick orientation, safety breifing and setting the groups before we head off.
If you guys have any other questions don't hesitate to drop me a line.

Quick question for you. I want to bring my Balck Lab to the hunt. She is trained but has not had a lot of experience. I would love to have her, but I do not want to ruin anyone's hunt with a rookie dog. Any issue with me bringing her?

Same here with regard to the dog. I can pick up for the continental or flush for the clean up. I can't pay to shoot this time though.
But I would be glad to bring the dog, meet you guys and help out...
