A friend of mine just got out of the hospital from saturday of 6 day firearm. After some complications he is now home. He was in a Loggy bayou stand and the strap broke causing him to fall to the ground and break his back. I know you all will ask, No he was not wearing a safety harness. I just wanted to put this out in case anyone is using this particular stand with the rubber strap. It still would not be fun getting down after it breaks while you are hanging in the air by a harness. This isn't meant to bash loggy bayou stands it just so happens that that was the kind of stand he was in. Wear your safety straps and check your stands constantly for wear. I just don't want to see anyone else go through what him and his family have.

I always wear a full body harness. I'd rather be hanging from the tree wondering how to get down then taking the short ride to the ground. I always have a penknife in my pocket, so if necessary I'd cut myself out & shimmy down. Cell phone is another option, but not one that should be counted on to save your a%&. Best plan is for someone to always know your stand location in case you don't check in after the hunt, but I'm sometimes guilty of not doing that one. That would mean I'd have to reveal my spots :)

When I was 17, i fell asleep in a treestand. You know, the two pieces of wood nailed to two trees.....:naughty: not too good. Fell out about 15 feet, only broke my leg. The hard part was my uncle had to carry me out. After, didnt hunt for about 15 yrs. Just didnt want to. No, wont go up with out a harness. Wont let my 13 yrold do it either. We have every safety precaution I can find. We stay connected the minute we leave the ground! Just not worth the fall!

Falling out of or falling while getting in a tree stand has become my biggest fear while hunting. I haven't fallen either. Had one close call a number of years ago on a wet, foggy morning. Used to feel that no stand was too high. Not anymore it seems. Used to hunt with no harness, I do now.

When I was 15 some DBAG shot out the supports of a real nice stand my Uncle and I built. I didnt see it as I climbed up into it at 5dark thirty. All mornin i thought the stand was a lil wobbly, but it was also real windy. Around 10 when I started to climb down I got my weight on the first reall steps, I let go of the stand, and it pretty much fell out of the tree all cockeyed:eek:...
The JO that shot it up, did it in the snow, so we followed his footsteps back to his house. He also stole a ladder stand of ours.

That was 9 years ago and I still have a bad taste in my mouth.... It was in Heislerville, the guys house was real close to the fire station, If your reading this, and you did it, you know who you are, Your the biggest worthless POS that ever walked, I could have died that day:mad:

Been many times I have looked down at the half penetrated ,missed the joint MIG welds on my API and wonder is this the day one snaps? My Summit Climber is worse. A 1" fillet weld with lack of fusion for the first .250 and completely miss the joint on the last .250".

Over All MIG welding is not the best structurally sound weld and to add some flunky welder just makes it even more scarier.

Winter project TIG weld all those joints.

Thanks for the heads up , hope your buddy is ok . You have to check your gear every time your out there and most of all take your time getting in and out of your stand .

A hunting friend of our family is a certified bow hunting safety instructor. He made it VERY clear years ago, as in, in no uncertain terms: NEVER, EVER, EVER, GO UP IN A TREE STAND USING ANYTHING OTHER THAN A FULL BODY HARNESS!!! The early strap set-ups that they gave you with the tree stands could cause other problems besides breaking and causing you to fall. They were known, apparently, for also catching you under the rib cage and causing you to suffocate or causing you to hang upside down and pass out.

I've never fallen but am sort of obsessed with climbing preparedness. I do wear a full body harness. However, my biggest worry is the time between when I leave the ground until I strap in after climbing. I use a climber (a Loggy Bayou ironically) and feel safer in that than steps, climbing sticks, hang ons, etc. Since there are two parts to the system I figure the odds of both failing at once are slim. It is a bit of a pain to lug around but the safety is worth it in my view. My boys will use climbers when they are ready.

Also, I recently stowed a couple of screw in steps into my hunting bag just in case I end up hanging from a safety harness. My thought is that I would like to be able to get to my feet rather than hang from the harness. Probably over kill, I know. Dads don't have the luxury of living on the edge.

unless you leave your hunting bag on, you probably wont reach it! Put them on your person if your going to bring them for that reason.

That why I alway have a knife in case I get stuck hanging....Just kidding. I never leave the ground without wrapping that rascal! I dont see how anyone today would take a chance. A few time I have turned my truck around because I forgot it.

Sorry to hear that. That is why it is so important to wear safety harnesses. I hope he recovers from the fall and wish him well.

Rev,

You're right. I do leave my bag on. I only carry a small one so I leave it on while in stand.
