We ahve a trapper using our property with our permission. Last week I talked to him about not driving down to our meadow area when the ground is wet, so as to not rut up our back lane, yet he does it again. Now he has a fox in a snare trap since at least yesterday. I have called him three times to come put this animal out of its misery, but I get no response for him. I am a hunter but not a trapper, but have no idea on what to do with this fox. I first reaction is to let the animal go somehow or do I put it our of its misery. Legally, I dont know that I can dispatch the animal because I don't have a trapping licence. To add insult to injury, this area is in where I usually run my lab, but now I cannot because all the dog want to do is go mess with this fox. What would you do?
Another issue is that he keeps telling me we have no beaver on our ponds yet I saw one today that had to be at least 40 lbs. I am getting a feeling that this guy does not know what he is talking about and we should get him off our property. Again, what would you do?

I'd shoot the fox and tell him not to come back.

Tough situation you have here! The law says even the property owner that grants the trapper permission to trap his/her land is not allowed to touch the traps without written permission from the trapper! You can't tend his traps or dispatch any animals without getting in trouble. I would take his 3 digit trapping license id and call F&G and let them deal with him. JMO
That is why the state says we have to tend every 24hrs, because of this exact situation..

first we have the 24 hour check. call the CO, he's making us all look bad.

second, you own the land. you make the rules. he's driving it cause it faster. speed is the name of the game. the more snares you can check the higher your catch is.

third, if this is you dog running area, it's no place for snares. snares don't kill domestics, but a pet owner gets upset when a member of their family is in one.

fourth, he may not have a beaver permit. he can't catch them without one. i bet he gets one next year. landowners see more then the average person thinks, trust what the landowner is telling you. i hate water trapping, but it has got me k9 land if i get rid of rats.

call the CO, tell him you want to dispatch the animal. if you don't have a rifle permit and a .22, use a love tap on the head, use wood, won't split the pelt. tell mr. trapper to pick up his line and go. find another trapper that gives a damn about the animals he's after.
thanks for opening up your land to a trapper. we do not all act this way.

Joe well said. This guy is making us all look bad in the eye of a non-trapper.Blade Runner I would contact the CO.As a trapper we all know the rules.Fox can break out of a snare if they work on it for long enough.I know you gave him permission, but he is oblivious to the laws and he continues to damage your property.Revoke his permission and try to locate a responsible trapper in your area.HRL:)
