View Full Version : Who shots in their yard?

So I live in the burbs and was wondering who shoots in their yard. Actually I am wondering what, those who do, use as a backstop. I don't have a shed, yet. My neighbor does but I don't think they'll approve of me using it as a backstop. The whole idea of a backstop is more for my neighbors', who will witness the shooting, peace of mind. I'm not oposed to the idea of something somewhat permanent either. So if anyone would like to share what they do it's greatly appreciated. Oh, I'm shooting a 20'' foam block target.

I do. But I have woods that I can hunt in behind the house.

Hang a couple of strips of old carpet. Like say, two long strips hanging over two 2x4s so they hang down to the ground. They will catch the arrow if you happen to miss. I'll try and describe it without pictures. Put two 4x4s into the ground or make a base so they stand upright. Put a 2x4 on either side of the top of the 4x4 and hang the carpet so it is just about to the ground. The carpet should create 4 layers for the arrow to hit. Usually the arrow will only make it through the first few layers and get hung up by the weave of the carpet. You can put a plywood backer if you are really concerned with penetration or if you are shooting broadheads and want it extra safe. You can cover the whole thing with burlap if you want to make it look a little better or less visible
Hope this helps. Maybe it stirred up some of your own ideas. Let us know how you make out.

I made a jig using 9 hay bails two 2x4x8 and two four foot peices of all thread . a 2X4 on bottom with the hay bails stack three on top of each other and a 2x4 on top use the all thread at the ends of the 2x4s to compress the hay bails i also used some old carpet to slow the arrow down .and cover with a trap when not in use.( Not a target just back stop).

I just do my best to set my target up in front of a hill or sloping ground. I have only missed the target about 4-6 times. I only lost one arrow

I shoot off the deck of my house at an archery deer target. Deck is about twelve feet high, so when I miss it goes in to the ground.I hunt from a stand fifteen feet high, so it works for me.:)

I shoot from an elevated position too. My kids on the other hand (whew). They have decorated my yard with lost arrows.

Not sure if I can get this to work, but here's my backstop built from plywood and hinges...

I wish I could, trapped in surburbia and surrounded by nonhunters:( I've been telling the wife for years that our next move will be to a property that has one of 2 things...Deer or Dock;)

I use The Block. I'm shooting on a slope so the arrows won't go far if I were to miss.

I have plans drawn up for target frame for a "Carbon Bag". I was just thinking if I made it wider and higher and put 1x's across it from top to bottom, it should stop what ever your shooting. It'll be heavier then my target frame, but if you make it out of presure treated wood, you could leave it outside. I shoot in my back yard. Bow, Muzzleloader, pistol, sluggun and Rifle. Right into my back hill. My neighbors don't mind, if they do they don't say anything. I got sort of rep of being a bit out there! I hunt in my back yard too. Forget subburbs. Move to the bush.

I shoot in my back, my yard slopes down to a creek and then up the back,so I'm in a valley but close prox to neighbors. If possible try to get some aproval from them If they will see so you don't get a visit from the Man. Or shoot early morning.
Oh yeah I use a deer target and a block.

I shoot in the back yard at a foam deer (thanks to PJ) toward the corner of my 6-foot cedar fence. Also, I have a foam board behind the deer target. For those rare misses the fence stops everything even a broadhead. My neighbors don't seem to mind and I'm in a tight development. My kids also shoot but their arrows don't even lodge in the fence.

I live in the burbs to, I shoot of my roof at "THE BLOCK" only a 18 yard shot but it works! Not worried about a miss because i'm shooting down, a miss would put the arrow in the ground. Never had a problem.

I've been thinking of setting up a ladder stand on the side of my detached garage and shooting "down" the side of my property.

I feel the same as you UB we shoot our bows, guns, kids ride there quads outback most all our neighbors do to so theres no complainers(except the one neighbor that calls the police for bottle rockets) we built 2 4x4 platforms for the bows at our stand heights
almost feel bad for the guys stuck in the city\burbs

I agree with UB and HD, nothing like coming home to the ponderosa, cracking open a cold one and taking a few shots each night to keep sharp for the day that big boy desides to come by.

Lucky,
I'm in Levittown too, I shot a few times in my yard, then my backyard neighbor stuck his head over the fence and yelled and told me to take "that shit" to the woods, and that I'm not allowed to shoot in my yard since we live in a residential area, seeing as how he is the neighborhood "Cop Caller" I choose to pack it up and live to shoot another day!!

I live in your typical suburban neighborhood adn shoot in my back yard all the time. I shoot from the stairwell going to my basement at a block 25 yards using my shed as a backstop (i've never missed the block) I always draw with the bow/arrow pointing down and shooting from the stairwell my arrows are only hovering a foot or two off the ground. My one neighbor came over when he saw me shooting i thought he was going to give me cr^p, but he was cool, he said I've been watching you (I though ut oh) then he said, you never miss a dot  I said yep, good enough to kill a deer :) Haven't heard from the back and other side neighbors yet but i'll keep shooting unless I'm told otherwise. And when i do, I'm telling the wife this time we move to the sticks or you can find a new husband  :D

My wife is now working 3 nights a week, which now allows me to (gulp) shoot in the living room. It is exactly 10 yards, the distance is not as important as the repetition and muscle memory (at least that is what I tell myself). Growing up (rural area) we framed and sided a small archery hut with a sloped roof. I bought a house that was surrounded by woods unfortunately that is no longer the case.....

Many moons ago I owned a row home. I used to set up my target in the basement, open a sliding door, walk thru the patio, open the screen door, go out in the yard and shoot. Was shooting thru the patio, two doors and past a pool table in the basement. Back then I was a fingers shooter too. Now that right there is stupid and I proved it. :naughty: I did well most of the time but sent an arrow thru the patio screen once and another time stuck my pool table.

I guess I lucked out. I can shoot up to 60 yds in my front lawn (bow only). Also got a few trees I set stands on for practice shots. We used to have a bast back in the day. A lot of my friends would all come over a couple weeks before archery season would come in and we'd all practice. I have a lot of good memories from that.
