I have an old 12 gauge single that I did exactly the same thing to. It had a 28 inch full choke barrel, and I cut off 3 inches and faced off the barrel. Then I drilled and tapped for a weaver mount on the chamber area of the barrel, and used the weaver base to mount a scope. It shoots pretty decent with a few different slugs out to about 75 yards, but I haven't really gone much further than that.

I'm sure you know this, but those old singles are usually very light, and a light gun will kick like you can't believe. After a few shots you won't want to shoot it anymore. But like anything else, when shooting at game, you hardly even feel it.

It's a fun project, good luck with yours.

You'll be able to pick the make/model of your shotgun and get the base specifically made for it if Weaver makes one. If not, then you need to find one that has a top radius that matches what your barrel is, and just use that one. Be aware though that you will be drilling over the chamber and while it's not a big deal drilling and tapping blind holes in thin stock like the barrel, it's not for a beginner. You'll need a decent drill press with a reliable stop so you don't go too deep and end up punching right through into the chamber.
(as a side note, I really don't think it is that big of a deal on something as low pressure as a shotgun if it does go through, but then you'll have to somehow fill the part of the hole that the screw doesn't fill so your shell will extract after being fired)
