How about a pic of your biggest. This 140 was from 4 years ago in The Adirondacks. I havent shot a buck since because I insist on topping this one or I wont kill.

I just got my mount back from last bow season, actually 1st day of permit, but can't get the pics posted. If someone can help I'll email to you. It's a nice 8pt with impressive brow tine and good symetry and mass. Off state land.

That ten was only 3 1/2 years old, in a lot of states he would be let go for another year, but that wasn't happening when he gave me the shot ;)
I'm watching a nine this year that's bigger than that one, more mass & spread, that ten just had great tine length & symmetry , giving it a high score, but the mass wasn't there.

Easier said than done :D. How do you know we're not talking about 7 year old 8 points scoring 180?;)

A 7 1/2 yr old 8pt sporting an 180 inch rack! Now that is something I'd like to see for myself! To score that high his G2,G3's would have to be absolutly huge! I've seen huge 140's class 8pts and if you want to imagine a 180" 8pt add 10" more inches onto each G2 and G3 for each side. Or just break it down with his browl tines, at least 6.7 more inches on each tine. Bucks scoring good is because of tine length (more long tines more inches add up), and a small portion of the score including bases and beam length.

Yep, and Mr. Janowsky was from Wellsburg Ny. He shot that buck in 1943. Non-typical gun record is 238-6. The buck was taken by Edward dodge of Knox, Pa. The buck was kill in Erie County in 1942.

I shot this buck on opening day 2003 gun season, in Wayne County PA
I never got it officially scored....
some measurements:
inside spread - 23.5 in
G2's - 11in
G3's - 9.5in
brow's - 2in :(
base of main beams - 5.5in (with respectable mass all the way to the tips)

based on my measurements, it score's somewhere in the low 140's .

Unless that thing had puny main beams, you are solidly in the 150s.

Honesdale. My buddy owns a 250 acre farm there that we have been hunting for the last 10 years. This is the biggest buck taken, but we have shot some other brutes as well...

Left beam - roughly 23in.
Right beam - roughly 25in.

james that is a beast 8 point if you would like to score him I would be happy explain how to do it just shoot me an e-mail if the g2 on the deers rt side is 11" hard to see in the pic then I would agree with barnesx either way that is a monster

Without having circumfrence measurements, I'll bet your right with the 140 estimate. A very good deer. How 'bout the rest of those pics? Anybody rough score those deer?

mudmarlin70
10-01-2008, 06:55 PM
Believe my 5x5 is close to 130. i want to get it done. net score will be close to gross. no real deductions.

There are some beautiful deer posted!

Mudmarlin70, screw those deductions. We go by the "show what they grow" formula:)

mudmarlin70
10-01-2008, 07:09 PM
i hear ya. I just want an official score because he will net so well. I dont worry about score to determine a shooter...just look for a mature buck...there's lots that wont make book, but are still trophy mature deer!

BarnesX.308
10-01-2008, 08:46 PM
James - for simple math, I split the difference in the main beams and went with 24". You gave me one circumference of 5.5 so I gave you two 4" measurements and a 3" for the other circumference measurements. Therefore, one antler would be roughly 63". Multiply by two and get 126. Add your 23.5 inside spread and you're just under 150. I don't know what the other side's measurements are or deductions but you're definitely what I would call "150 Class". Only thing B&C might screw you on is the inside spread is greater than one of the beam lengths. I forget whether it has to be less than one or both beam lengths.

24 - main beam
2 - brow
11 - G2
9.5 - G3
5.5 - H1
4 - H2
4 - H3
3 - H4

63 - Total one beam

Honesdale! Hun we drive a couple swamps near Waymart. I've also got a couple of good friends from that area. We primarily hunt near Hamlin. Good job on the buck though man thats a great deer.

Hey Barnes, do you have a copy of the scoring system you used ? Or know of a link I can go to ? I've seen many variations and equations on scoring deer .

Small world isn't it ACE.... Lots of bruisers come out of that area every year.

Offhand, I'm not sure. I just learned over the years. Basically, it's pretty easy.

Measure the length of the main beam, all the tines and 4 circumferences. The first would be smallest point between head and brow tine, then smallest point between each tine. For an 8 pointer, you won't have a 3rd and 4th tine to measure between, so you'll measure the circumference between the 3rd tine and half way to the end of the main beam.

Put these numbers in a column. Take these measurements on the other antler and put them in another column. Subtract the difference of each measurement and that will make a 3rd column. Add up your columns and add the totals of the first two together. Then subtract the total differences. That will get you you gross. Add the inside spread to both and you'll have your total gross and total net.

BarnesX.308
10-02-2008, 07:07 AM
Found something. Plug in all your measurements and it will tally your score for you. I think it's just net.
