What's the best call (mouse, rabbit, wounded fawn, etc.) for calling in coyotes. I just purchased a handheld call with 4 or 5 calls on it and a blow call that creates 3 different wounded prey. I'm participating in my first coyote hunt in Feb. and would like to know from the sharpies what calls/techniques work best.

I have killed many coyotes here in NJ, and what seems to work for me is to use a howler to locate them first! I start by using a male or female challenge howl, and if no responses I will go to the quaker mouse squeeler. Most of the coyotes that I have encountered here in the state are not very responsive and tend to be very curious to distress calls. If nothing shows within 15-20 minutes move on to you next location. It's always helpful to do some daytime scouting before you decide to just take a seat anywhere! Always good to have a second caller or shooter with you. Two sets of eyes are better than one! I look for nice open areas like fields, open oaks etc to do some calling. It takes tons of time and patience and lots of scent control to kill one of these critters, since we don't have that many in the area. But for every one that you miss or for everyone that figures out what you are before you see him, you have just educated another coyote! Good luck

I've had them come in to the wounded rabbit. Every time they circle downwind and stop before I see them. That seems to be a problem for me.

We located them at dusk and after dark with the howler.

They are are pretty easy to locate at night, me and a friend went out last night and located 2 nice packs with 3-4 in each group. I didnt want to use any distress calls and possibly educate these dogs, because the night season does not open until the 19th here in NJ. Takes time and patience

Does this work in northern and southern Jersey? What can you use to take coyotes?

The mouse squeaker is for close in work. Like when you get a coyote to come in to the rabbit squealer, but you need him to close in a little or possible move for better shot position. Their sound doesn't carry too far, though.

Although, when kids get a hold of things that make noise, they always seem to sound louder :D.

Don B - ready for some Manhattans and crazy big salads? How about some crab legs, shrimp, clams, grouper, mahi and calamari? We're going to do it up right!!!

Red and White cans for me, baby!!!!

Just bring a $20. I'm going to go out and buy up to $180 worth of seafood. Everyone gives me a $20 when they get there. If it's less than $180, I'll be making change. With crab legs, I doubt it will be difficult to reach that $180 mark :D:D:D.

What kind of gun you using for coyotes? I'm either using a 12ga/222 Rem combo gun or a 25-06. I need to get some 100gr Barnes Triple Shocks and work up a good handload first.

i was near that beaver dam i was telling you about.
i called in a family of coon out of a den tree. seems you missed a few along that creek.
i was hoping for that grey or the yotes, but only the coons came in. i didn't shoot, wasn't sure if they were fair game. they are with #4 or smaller.
i only did one set. i'll be out friday and saturday night. you looking to hunt?
i pulled the snares out of my deer spot. moved south on the 35 side, only set a few fox sets. i'll get more out as the week goes on. with the warm up thursday and friday the coon will out of the dens.
