i see alot of people spending alot of money on mossy oak under amour and $40 bottles of cover scent. does it realy make that much difference. i use my old USMC cammies and i let them set in a paper bag of pine needles and sit in a tree stand so is camo and scent realy all that?

I look at it like this, if you have the money to blow, then get the scent cover clothing if it makes you feel better. I personally buy my clothing based on it's durability and warmth rating. If I'm cold, the hunt is over. I'm pretty meticulous with the way I store it or prepare it before I go hunting. Leave them hang outside for about an hour before you leave. The fresh air is the best deodorizer in the world.

Anything you can do to help mute your scent helps, including the expensive suits. However, most people buy them, yet they overlook the thing that's rarely covered by any clothing, yet stinks the most, their breath! When you pay for an expensive Elk bow hunt, your guide will not even attempt to get you within shooting range of a bull elk without a peice of gum in your & his mouth. They'll tell you before you come to bring lots of gum, cause you'll be chewing it a lot if you want to get within bow range of an elk. Most any gum will do, as the sweet smell of most gum flavors is certainly better than your bare smelly breath though they do sell breath deoderizing gum specifically for hunting that has some chemical in it that kills bad breath. It's a lot cheaper than a scent lok suit if you can't swing one of them, atleast chew some gum, and better yet the breath killing gum. If you can swing a scent lok suit, scent eliminator base layers, carbon spray, cover scents etc.. too, great. They help too but none of it means you can stop paying attention to the wind, no matter how much attention you pay to being scent free, it's not going to work everytime you have deer down wind, but you're still better off taking any precautions you can to be scent free, than not.

I have a "sweat locker" outfit:DThat what we call it because early season is so hot. I wear it sometimes.
Your wind is all that matters. You can wear whatever you want but if the wind is bad its over. I've gone straight from work and killed deer in jeans and a flannel bowhunting.
Scent free BS = about 15%
The wind direction = about 85%
Camo is more hunters hiding from each other or looking cool....
Don't get me wrong when I have time before a hunt I do the BS no scent everything. But if the wind is wrong I won't go to those spots.
I watched 3 rackers spook from the scent my boots left on the way in (2 hours later). Knee high rubbers, scent shield spray and never worn anywhere but woods...They got some sniffers

MattG is absolutely correct! Your breath is your worst enemy! I always chew some kind of gum before entering the woods! I also use scent-loc boots. In my opinion that's my 2 main worries before hitting the woods, then when I get there I check out the wind direction. If it's the wrong wind, I'll move to a stand that gives me the best wind direction. If I don't have it then I won't hunt that spot that day!

i stopped using all that scent lock stuff last year and saw more deer then the previous years. i payed a lot more attention to the wind i didnt get lazy and just set up. i always were high rubber boots and my stands sit from 20-30 feet in the tree. have to hunt the wind the deer always amaze me how well they can smell. they just have to smell you and they are gone. ive been bow hunting for 25 years and seen plenty of deer before scent lock and sprays were ever around. i do use doe scents they absolutely work, but thats about it.

I'll take some  :D
It is certainly true that non of this stuff can replace chosing where to hunt based on wind direction. Bowhunting I got enough options to always pay attention to the wind, and always do in chosing where i'll hunt, though the topogaphy where we hunt lends to ever changeing wind directions, swirling wind, etc. so you set up for the prevailing winds and take any measure you can for scent control. Rifle season when everyone's up and our only option is our perennial opening day stands is when I'll pull out all the stops for scent control as I have no choice in where i'm hunting and prepare to sit from dawn to dusk. Overall archer101 is right that your feet and breath are your # 1 issues. Even with spraying all rubber boots with scent eliminator i've had deer spook that cut my tracks, but not nearly as many as did in the past wearing any old boots I had, so anything precautions you can take are worth the effort. Your head/hair is another issue, I always cap my head with a scentlok hat or hood now. To me, if nothing else, it's a confidence issue, preparation breeds success.

I forgot about the head! I also use a scent-loc hat!

Excellent points Matt about the head and breath. They are probably the 2 things that emit the most smell and get overlooked the most.

Sharing a cabin with you during buck season, I think you overlooked the #1 foul smell emitting oriface :D

People don't give it a chance. It's an acquired taste. :D

Hunt the wind!!! Suits and cover scents can't hurt when they get real close but if you are down wind you are screwed, 600$ suit or not. And yes, I have all the suits and scents I can afford:huh:. I'm

I know my dad and grandfather where hunting in jeans and a flannel shirt. While smoking cigarettes and drinking coffee. They killed deer and so did everyone else before scentlok was invented. I think it is all a gimmick. I do where camo without scentlok or cover scents and I kill deer every year.

I stoped buying it, seen as many if not more with out it, just work the wind, I always hang two stands, one on eather side of run if one of them are not good for the wind I do not hunt that spot, if they bust you one time you may as well move as they DO NOT forget, good luck and be safe.

Last year didn't use them but found a set of Scentlok base layer on Dick's clearence rack for $25. So I'll give them a shot.
