Been hunting for a long time, but there are two shots that I had taken over the years that really stand out. The first was at a nice six poiner in North Carolina, the shot was 175yds. there was two nice six pointers with the better one standing behind the other. The one that I shot was about 8" higher than the other only because it was on a little knoll, nice shot using 7M/M 160gr. Gran Slam (Speer) The other was in Wyoming hunting antelope, this shot was at 325yds. once again using the 7 M/M same load.
The antelope was a nice 16+ on the horns, one of the best hunts that I was ever on, also took a mule deer on that trip. I'm not sure if they still make the "Gran Slams" maybe they just have it under another name, they were the best bullets that I had ever used, always one shot, one kill, 98% retention. Just wondering if anyone has a hunt that stands out in your memory ? ?

Caribou at 150 yards. Shot offhand, no rests around. Dropped like a stone.
8 point buck. Shot him left handed as he was passing by the wrong side of the tree.

Two years ago a doe at 275 yards. We were back at the barn having lunch on the 4th or 5th day when two doe came downhill and stopped at the edge of our field. It seemed pretty far but I figured what the hell? I layed down my sandwich and went out on the deck, kneeling down and resting the 308 on the top railing. They started to run across the field but I gave a couple baaaaahhhhs and the larger doe stopped. She went straight down kicking once or twice. Sierra 165 grain HPBT.

Nine point buck with 20ga Copper Solid at 67 yards with scope at 9 power in a foot of swamp water through a 10 x 10 hole in the brush. I thought it was mink swimming after minnies, seeing movement in the water. Then the brown, then the sun on the antlers, but nothing to shoot through until I saw that little hole, As soon as he stepped in, I squeezed off, and he went 20 yards. If the hole wasn't there, he would have walked, because I just couldn't take the chance for a bad shot.

A couple of years ago I was groundhog hunting in NJ. I shot a groundhog at 410 yards. I was using a savage model 12 FV in the .204. The bullet I use is the hornady 32 grain V-Max.

Lets just say i have had a few that happened so fast there was no time to get nervous. Last year a 6 point got pushed to me on a drive and this deer running faster then i ever seen a deer run. the deer would pop in my scope every split second but some how i managed to put it right through the heart. Sometimes i think your body reacts better when there is no time to think. I been hunting almost 20 years now and i still shake like crazy when a buck creeps in slow

Back in '98 just got out of the Marines hunting squirrels with my cousin. We were walking across the cow field towards the woods and my cousin looks thru the binoculars and sees a squirrel eating a nut in the the top of a tree about 175yrds from us. He says lets see what they taught you. So from standing position I take out my ruger 22 rifle and line up the scope. One shot one Kill . LOL When we got up to the squirrel it was dead , but still had it hands around the nut and the nut in its mouth.

Just this past years buck. First Thursday of rifle. Washington County, Pa in 2B WMU. Saw a buck and a doe walking along a super thick ridge. the only way I saw them was cause they walked through the only openning in the whole ridge. I had no clue how many pts the buck was when I first saw him, just saw antler. The SUN was right in my face and no way to escape it!!!!. After they went past the openning I thought their went my buck for 07'!!! The ridge goes right past me, but it's so thick you still can't see much. A half hour goes by and I'm thinking their went my chance. I look about 60 yds to my right in the thicket and I can just see an ear twitching. Finally I see its the doe. They are now directly 60yds to my right. I'm looking all through this thicket from my treestand and can't see the buck. Finally I see movement. He stops in a Y of a tree. Now, at this point I'm in the most uncomfortable shooting position you could imagine. From trying to get away from the sun and find the buck in my scope I have a hoe through this Y in the tree and he's facing right at me. And i'm looking for 4pts to one side. Counting, and looking and county etc. Finally I see 4pts he's legal. Using a 270 Win round through a Savage model 110 I keep the crosshairs on his boiler and very very slowly squeeze one off. Perfect shot!! He roles down the ridge and no tracking involved. I was in the most unbelievable position you could ever imagine and free hand and I pulled the shot off. Wasen't a big buck, but a buck at that and a hell of a shot! Oh and a week or two afterwards small game hunting same spot decided to see how much space was in that Y. Only 7 inches of space that I shot through in that Y.
I really pays to be shoot different sports. In the past I shot a lot of skeet. BEST DEER shots were skeet shots- both right to left, both deer on the run about 20 yards, knew he was coming. First was from standing expectantly with planned fire lanes, second was from sitting to standing and I had to gamble on which side they would break to- since they were behind me and the lead doe a snortin and stomping. Worked out both times, one shot down, no chasing.

My cousin and I were walking up to our stands and before I got to mine I heard him shoot. The next thing I know he waving to me to come over fast. I got next to him he has one down , but there are four more down in the field . Way down the field. I'm shooting a Encore with 245gr powerbelt bullet with 100grs of power. I have shot this load at two hundred yards and know the drop ,but these ranged at 283 yards. With a very good rest I hold a little over the lead doe and pulled the trigger. She dropped on the spot. If I had not shot the gun at long ranges I would never had taken the chance, but the bullet went right where it was suppose to.

3 years ago, I took a nice 6 at 128yds with my T/C .54 Hawken w/iron sights. Elbows on my knees in my climbing stand. I shoot a 535 gr maxi-hunter and 90 gr Pyrodex. I went high, aimed at the top of the shoulder, thinking there would be some drop at that distance. Apparently not, spined him and he never took another step.

When was that? 2000? 2001 was the first year of combined buck and doe. 2002 was the first year of AR. I know 1998 was still the separate buck and doe season. Must have been 1999 or 2000, right?

I've shot my share of rabbit, ducks, quail, deer etc, . My funniest shot ever was with a pellet gun. I was living in Vineland at the time. We had rats in the neighborhood. It was dusk and my ex came in the house and told me about rats in the backyard. I went outside and saw the rats on the neighbors property. They were sitting up. I pumped the crossman up, aimed thru 2 chain link fences (ours and the neighbors) and shot. We heard a little yelp and the rat just fell.:D
My ex couldn't believe the shot. After we finished laughing we marked it off and it was a 75ft shot. :)

Right around there Scott! I cant rember the year! But the season made sence, to me!It gave the hunters that couldnt take off of work a chance
to take a doe on the last day of buck, and doe was still a 3 day season! i had Deer all over my area!

my best was back in 1986. i was stationed in va. got permission to hunt a private farm. we all know those southern boys like to put the tree stand 25' up. i was up there overlooking a corn field. 6 pointer, out about 300yds. actually the 2nd field over from my stand, shot over 1 hedge row, and irrigation ditch, with the tree swaying. 1 shot dropped in his tracks, 30-06. and the best part was i was shooting my own hand-loads. 180gr hornady bullets

My best shot with a rifle was a ground hog at 525yds with a 62gr 223 fmg match from a bull bbl 26"single shot rifle 14 x scope from a sand bag bench, The neat thing was I busted out his two big front teeth! I also dusted a crow at similar range but killed him with gravel fragments from a stone at the top of a harvested corn row.
As for deer 125yds with a Rem 700 50cal bpr Rem core lock hp.

Rifles are legal in Jersey for 'hogs. Starts with the 22 RF and Long Rifles and goes to 270 or above, but you can't use a bullet heavier than 100 gr. I used my 6mm Rem until it got crowded, switched to my HMR.
22 shorts can be used by trappers to dispatch critters.

Hey Buchhammer, thanks for the info. Never knew you could use a rifle in NJ for anything. Not doubting you but I have to see it in writing in the game laws. I'll check it out:eek:
