One old time I was talking to the other day said to bait with jelly donuts. He said the deer like the sugar because it helps them fatten up for the winter. Has anyone else ever used the "donut-method"?
Also, does using different types of baits in different seasons matter? Like apples now, corn more towards fall, etc. I'm in a natural ground blind with heavily traveled paths 12-15 yards on each side. Where would you put the bait in relation to these trails?
I havent heard of baiting w/donuts.but would imagine it would get pretty expensive unless you worked at dunkin donuts:)

I found a baitpile of jelly donuts years ago off of route 9 near Smithville. It was when baiting was still illegal and I was confused as to the choice of bait. Well those deer tore into the jellies. They ripped the tops off and licked all the jelly out but the didnt eat the bread parts.

a guy that lives a few miles from me drives a bread truck. he throws out the stale bread in the yard. i have seen the deer eating the rolls.
jelly donuts-haven't heard that one for deer.
i would think the bears and the coon would be all over them, and early season the bees will be on them.

I gotta say if you're on heavily traveled trails i wouldnt bait
maybe a few sprinkles of corn so they stop and eat
If you want to bait, or the deer arn't coming till late
put a big pile maybe down the trail a bit to draw them out
i'm trying that this year, i'd be sitting in my stand hearing deer coming through the fragmitis, then darkness would fall soon as i start to lower my bow, i would hear it crash back through the frag, so i put a big pile about 50 yrds behind the stand, we'll see if that brings them out a lil earlier

A guy who let me hunt his property way back in high school didn't allow baiting stands. Instead he would dump truck loads of corn and potatoes in one area and have us hunt the runs coming to the pile(100's of yrds in). It worked well:shoot:

Another good bait is Peanut butter, take a jar and rub it into the bark of the trees around your stand. the'll keep coming back licking on the trees because they can never get it all out. and a jar of peanut butter can go a long way. Plus no bees....
