PA guy, sorry. Doesn't NJ let you hunt bucks during your in-line season? I wish they would let PA do that.

There is no difference in season for Inlines and traditionals (unless they changed it this year)
ML hunting starts with 2 days a week before 6 day firearm.
You can also use your muzzleloader during 6 day firearm season, but it is buck only for most zones.

Some guys are real selective on the bucks they shoot in the early ML season. That late season muzzleloading can be deadly when the post rut starts and you don't want to tag out early on a juvenile when the big boys start chasing again:naughty:. But then again, two does for the freezer is just fine with me if Mr. Right doesn't stumble by:thup:

What kinda bullets and what grain of powder do you guys use, If I remember correctly I was shootin' 250g sabots and 120 of powder...I havent muzzleloaded in years and might give it a try again this year... I shoot a original knight disc. What combos will most likely work best

I shoot TC Mag Sabots. The bullet is all lead no copper jacket. I wasn't getting good expansion with the copper bullets. Lead flattens out real nice on impact causing more damage. As for pellets, Pyrodex. All the guys that I hunt with that shoot the Rem 700 shoot this same combo and it seems to work for us.

What are your thoughts on 160g bullets? Are they too light to knock down deer? Are they better for long range shots, dont drop as much? I'm not a real big ballistics guy
onthehunt
09-17-2008, 07:05 PM
Yeah I'm not either, but BarnesX is! Let him give you the run down. In my experience with ML's, you have to play with powder weight and bullet weight to see what works best. I can throw 150gr of powder in my gun but it doesn't group well. This was the combo I came up with through trial and era. Best thing to do is find a guy that shoots the same gun and ask what works best. And by the way, 160's aren't too small to knock'em down
swab1985
09-17-2008, 10:05 PM
Thanks, I figured a 160 would kill a deer, just wonder why I never hear of anyone using lighter loads, I guess it depends on what your gun shoots best

M/L bullet weight is a function of bore size. The bigger the bore, the bigger the bullet that is required to fill it. If you wanted to use real light bullets, down-size the hole in the barrel. Simple physics.
I had used the 185 loads in my 45 Cal. Contender with some success. They were actually .40 Cal. Pistol bullets with a sabot. Unlike progressive powders, black or black substitutes are limited by the speed of the slug [1,750 to 2,200 f.p.s.] If you wanted more killing power, you used a bigger bore with a correspondingly heavier bullet. Bigger/heavier bullets at the same speed equals more kinetic energy [killing power]. The African elephant hunters used 4-bore guns. [4-ounce balls at 1,700 f.p.s. – kills at both ends].
Jersey requires a bore of at least 44 Cal. Most of us shoot 50 Cals. If you had a bore-sized bullet that weighed 160 gr in a 50 Cal, it would be way short and fly like a brick, not the best combo – thus the heavier bullets we all use.
Is that any help?
