Just getting started into duck hunting. Looking to spend some money on decoys.

Anyone every use Deeks decoys? For where and how i will be hunting they would be awsome. But do they work?

I just checked out their site. Self infating decoys are at best troublesome. They really don't hold paint well and the whole self inflating thing is a little decieveing. Basically they are rubber decoys. I have a bunch from the 1960 called Plasti Duck decoys. Now I use them as broadbills when I put out a mega spread for lay out hunting. I think one of the best cheaper decoys out there are Green Head Gear life size models. The ones with the 60/40 keel are the ones I have. Got them as a gift from a grateful goose hunter I took out. They seem to be holding their paint well after several seasons and they are very realistic. And I do not baby my blocks. They are not heavy so they would be good for walk in hunts. The only draw back is they do not ride in rough water well. If you are hunting smaller ponds/creeks this should not matter then. Personally, I like a heavier decoy like a Herters for bigger water. Hope that helps.

Used the deeks as a collectable on the shelf.G&H or any other plastic weighted keel brand are well made, we use mostly magnum decoys need fewer.

Thanks guys . I was looking at both the decoys mentioned also.

I thought those things would be garbage.

Don't buy anything really cheap.. Get solid decoys that'll last you as many seasons as possible.. I look at it like this, all my hunting toys are "investments" so I buy quality stuff that I know I'll take care of and get my money's worth out of

Green Head Gear. Best for the money. The earlier versions did not hold paint well, but they have fixed the problem.

I agree with A-5, Green Head Gear are great decoys, and are reasonable in price. I use them in small water or where we don't get much current, but if the wind is up or I am hunting the bay/big water, I got to the hand carved cork or wood. The heavier decoys ride the big water much better.

I have rigged GHG Blackducks Oversize(6), Sleeping Black Ducks(2), Greenwing Teal(8), Feeding Mallards(2), Pintails(pair), Widgeon(pair), Buffleheads(12), and 11 Flambeau Mallards. Almost all have GHG Keel Grabber 4oz rigging. Over $300 invested. I'll include 2 decoy bags. Used 4 or 5 times. $175 Picked up.

These were all bought new last year.

WTF you quittin already?

OR, knowing you, are you carving yourself a set of corks?

Walkin in can't beat GHG Hot buy mallards with 4 oz weights. A dozen weighs nothing and is plenty of bodies.

If I was building a plastic rig today for puddle ducks it would be...

1 doz oversized ghg mallards
1/2 dozen oversized ghg blacks
1/2 doz oversized ghg pintails
2 dozen life sized ghg teal
1 doz life sized ghg goose floaters, 8 active 4 resting

I rig most of my stuiff with H style weights and 18 feet of line. I tie off the line to match the water depth, usually at about 6-8 feet but if I need a longer line I have it.

I run everything except teal and geese these days out of six slot avery bags too, they make it very easy and protect the decoys...

Let's not talk divers cause that will drive you to the poorhouse...

When you get serious the puddle duck decoys become cork or cedar but that is an entirely seperate story LOL...

Lately I'm setting...

8 mallards, 2 blacks, 2 pintail drakes and 6 geese...

OR...

6 mallards and 4 geese

late season sometimes smaller is better...

and don't forget mojo duck...

Agree with Darrin, this time of year smaller spread is better. Handful of mallards and a couple of blacks. I put the black ducks off on their own. put in a couple of geese and you are set.

GHG are best for money
-Dozen Mallards
-Dozen Teal
-1/2 Dozen black duck

you will be set with that.

Early season put out all of the teal and maybe a couple Mallard hens and blackduck

Still using mojos this time of year? I just got one for Christmas and I feel like it gets their attention but is keeping them from finishing. This is my first time using one so I'm still experimenting with where and how to set it up in my decoys.

Thanks darrin that is very helpful. I was looking at a dozen ghg mallard "hot buys" up at cabelas. I am going to buy them, purchased 1/2 dozen pin tail the other day and working on a few blacks. I am going to be ready for next season. Thanks alot.

Still using it almost every time.

It will do exactly what you said depending on how and when it is set..

I can't get all into every little trick I pull, my competition is likely reading...
