I assume that you are talking about a handhelp GPS? I can tell you what NOT to buy...Magellan Triton 300. I bought one last week and it sucks...doesn't do half of the functions the box says it does. It is going back as soon as I can get out there later this week.

Best handheld is the Garmin Vista. Loaded with features in a compact size

I got a Garmin for Christmas last year, just not sure exactly what model. Once I find out I'll post it up because I am very pleased. I haven't found a place that is doesn't get a signal.

On top of that, the one I purchased usually comes bundled with the Topo map program which is very nice.

It is at my apartment but I'll find out for you tomorrow.

I had a hand held Magellan that I didn't care for. Would lose its' signal in medium tree cover and it seemed to have dead spots in coverage even in the open. I also bought a $99 dollar Garmin that was no good either.

I have a Garmen Etrx. It's good. Although I think my system needs a update. It's been taking longer and longer to get a signal where I'm at.

Sounds like the Garmin may be the way, Can it use land and marine software or is it one or the other?
