Was just wondering who on here shoots 45 caliber muzzleloaders for hunting deer? I personally do and i love it. I shoot a cva 45 caliber kodiak pro magnum. I must say my groups at a hundred yards are very impressive.

I do. I shoot a CVA optima in 45. I really can complain with the 45 cal. It dosen't put deer right on their butts like the 50 does. They are deffinatly making the 45 obsolete. It is getting harder and harder to find 45 cal powder amd bullets. Cabelas has completely stopped carring it. Everything is 50 now. Only a few places I know to get stuff and most of them are mail order.

Thanks Pagrizz. I might call ya on that one. I opted for the 45 for a couple reasons. It can still take all the lg game the 50 can. You just get better distance with the 45. I can still take a 200yd shot with the 45 and not have no where near the bullet drop as the 50. Now that as has to do with the powder charge, but you still use less in a 45. Almost always I use 100g of powder in my 45 in-line. If I know I'm going to take a 200yd and maybe plus shot I'll put in 150g of powder. It's just a shame how they're trying to make the 50 the universal in-line cal. I only know of one local shop in Bucks that has 45 cal powder pellets. Another shop in Fayette Co., but thats a lil far for me now. Right now I'm shooting a 100g (2pellets) of triple 7 and a 175grain cabelas dead center. I have the gun adjusted about an inch and half high at 100yds.

They tried pushing the 45 .but for some reason it did not happen. It went the same way with the 16 ga shotgun a few years back .A few companies brought out new guns and lightfields made new slugs. It think I sold ten boxes of those slugs. I have some 195 grain powerbelts and a couple boxes of 45 cal pellets left.

We may all be shooting .45s in NJ if the .50 cal ban goes through. I haven't heard much in the last few months. Anyone know the status of that one?

THANKS A LOT PAGRIZZ!!!!! I'll probably take you up on that offer this summer when I go to resight in my in-line. I just want a bullet to fly great and have the nock down power. Those Cabelas dead centers fly great, but like the doe I got new years eve. I hit lungs and liver (powered by 100grains of power) and she still went 70+ yds (as a crow flys so it was probably more). Those bullets where 175gr. I was expecting more knock down power. When examining the exit wounds they appeared no bigger than the entrance wound.

Hey PaGrizz,

I was thinking to myself lately about finding that great all around muzzleloader sabot. If you can still find the powerbelts I would greatly appreciate it. Just shoot me a PM if you have a when, were, and how much. Thanks again.

Be careful if you go to a sabot in a 45cal. In NJ the smallest projectile for deer hunting with muzzle loading rifle is 44cal, now if you shoot a 45cal and use a sabot, what size is the projectile? Don't want to see anybody get any grief from the law, just check your regs.

Ace, 1 other thing, if you can't find any pellets do you want to sell the gun cheap?:D I can always put that loose stuff they call black powder in it and see if that works. LOL:razz: You guys are funny, hey what happens if you put your pellets in upside down. :o

Ace when I teach hunter education and a group of students come to the range you would not believe the amount that think their gun can only shoot pellets. I laugh all the time but see a trend of hunters coming up that don't know basics. They are told about these easy to use pellets and that's all they know. It's kind of an inside joke between instructors to tell each other we had to go home because we are out of pellets.

Oh I know what your talking about. I teach hunter ed myself too. Usually I'll just help out when it comes to talking about firearms. I'll do more talking about archery, sport and safty. I had a few kids that knew about the TC firestorm (?) that shoots loose and pellet powder. A few pick up on it. They're kids though they have a lot to learn.

You shoot a 45 cal?

Nah, all 50's. Makes for a lot easier on supplies and bullet molds. I do shoot some manufatured bullets but I like to mold my own maxi's also. Do you mold your own or just buy them?

It is the only muzzleloader I have and it's an in-line. I purchase all my rounds. Which is making things more of a pain in the butt. The 45 supplies are becoming less available. I could always just get another barrel for it in 50 if it becomes bad. Don't want to, but well see. Untill my scrounging abilites fail me I'll still shoot it. Its a deer killer.
