If you limed already, the best time to plant clover is in the fall, but you can get a good stand by frost seeding your bare spots.
In late Feb, or March seed those areas or the entire plot when temps are still dropping below freezing at night, but thawing during the day. The heaving of the ground from the repeated freezing and thawing causes the seed to settle into the ground before germination.

Mud is right you really gotta lime the soil. Did you mow any of it down? How big is the polt and how big is the place you hunt?

Lord knows I havent had to mow mine at all...
As you can see from the exclusion cage, they keep it knocked down right to the ground. At the tiome of that pic, the cage was in place less than two weeks. You can see the amount of pressure on the rest of the plot for only two weeks of growth! My stand in that picture is only approx. 1/2 acre. And it's on only a six acre piece! NJ.....
And the cost for that plot was probably less than the cost of "a pile" to alot of guys. Less then ahundred bucks, more time than cash when everything was said and done.
And I love sitting that place...I dont hunt any stand all that often, and I didnt hunt that stand much at all with my son in the hospital all regular archery season, but it's a perennial stand and with a little frost seeding, it will come on even stronger next year.
