Well, I can take the wait anymore. I put out a test line. Only 5 pieces of steel. Would of been 6, but one of my rebar steaks busted (yeah you believe that). Deffinatly shouldn't of used all scents. They are probably all washed out right now. We'll see though. Didn't find any fresh tracks, but I know he's gotta still be around. Still can't believe I'm trying to attempt to trap coyote in this area. Either I'm gonna crash and burn or I'll get em. Really could use some snow. That would really help with tracking and finding travel routes.

Good luck and be patient!
When you have them exactly figured out what they are doing, BAM they have changed their routine again...

I LOVE SNOW!!!!! Going out at first light to do some tracking. Personally IMO I think the key to my (mild) success last season was tracking them and knowing their movements. Now with this wonderful SNOW I'm gonna do just that! Heck I think I'm gonna throw the slug gun on my back too just in case I see a tail. It should be a great morning. I'm using up my last sick day!!!!!!!:D:D:D I know a guy up in NE Pa and he's already got in 20 sumthin yotes, 20 sumthin coon, 20 sumthin reds, 15 grays, 2 porcupines, a ton of grinners, and a bear cub. The PGC actually got to the cub before he even check his traps. They released it and left a note on what happened. Only thing I'm thinking is what was he using that that bear couldn't get out? Size 3's?!?! double cross steak 30inchers!?! I had a couple ppl tell me that about yotes ohhh better cross steak! Nah ya don't. I just have one steak 28"+. They don't get out of that. He's also been trappin since the season opened so.

but you guys have clay and rock for "dirt"
down hear i have 6" of top soil then sand till you hit china.
all my snares are anchored to trees. very few times i pound a stake, and thats only for fox. and i've had reds that work a 24" stake loose.
even earth anchors won't work south of me, it's all sugar sand. double 24" pogos and berksires pull right out.

jump in with a trapper and run his line with him.
you need to take the test. even if you aren't going to trap-take the test.
i'm friends with the southern trapping teacher he's a good guy. you can learn from him. he's not going to tell you, set there. you have to learn that on your own. thats were a ride along helps.
yotes are the hardest animal we have to trap, that and mink snaring.
tough animal to learn on.
what ron says is, half that take the class will trap after that first dispatch, then half of that number will go on to buy the next years lic. in january. this has held true for 15 years. guys have no problem shooting a deer at 20 yards then dropping it off to the butcher. but the same guy can't dispatch a animal in a cage or on a snare at 2', then put up the fur.

I haven;t trapped in 5 years. I'll get back into it when my kids become a little more independent. Ron taught me 17 years ago. Good guy and when I caught my first fox I drove all the way down to his house and he helped me put it up.

Well I've got more yotes and fox around than I thought. Cut aleast 4-5 different yote tracks one being a big boy. I think I may even have a gray or two around. Either that or it's a house cat. Their tracks look to alike to me. Only have 4 traps out now, but all are in really good locations for yote. We'll see. Can't wait till tommorw morning. Just hope all the rain holds off. I really need to put dirt holes out. On a side note man did it suck trying to find all my traps in the snow. All where covered up and frozen over. Almost gave up on one, but found it. Did find one spot yote dug up. If you've ever seen it you know what I'm talking about. It's usually a line sometimes like in a half circle that they just tear up. Found two of these. I'll keep ya posted.

Hun that stinks! Sand would make it tough. I have a problem here at my spot. It is soooooo rocky. Sometimes I'll make a set and have to cover it back up cause I can't get the steak in because of all the rock. When I was trapping in SW PA I had a lot of that really thick clay like dirt. Makes your trap sit well, but good luck gettin your steak out when the ground freezes below.

Do you need a lic. to trap on your own farm?I guess I want to get started on coons and possum before attempting coyotes?

you maybr able to use cages and coni's on your land without a lic., better call on that.
but snares you have to have the snare cert. from the state.

i know you can hunt your own place without a lic. but trapping i'm not sure.
coons are about $14 put up
grinners are about $2 put up
