Today a buddy sold me a 93R17 with a BSA Sweet 17 scope + a box of HMR 20 grains for $200.

I dont really need it, but you know how it goes - see it, it is sweet, buy it. Plus he is a buddy and my theory is he needs Xmas $ (for his sweetie demands - he is definitly p whipped.)

Have not fired it. He told me it is good on squirrels to 75 yds. It has the adjustable trigger. Looking for feedback.

PS I do shoot high velocity 17 cal air rifle (1100) & pistol (750)

Those savage triggers are pritty sweet! I always thought about picking up a 17. I know they are sooo accurate. Joking around one day a couple of us dared my buddy he couldn't hit a nickle and 300 yds with his 17 marlin. Well he got it. Always shoot and an awsome caliber. Good luck with it!

Bull barrel on that one or standard? I had the same one with the heavy target barrel and it easily shot MOA groups at 100 yds with Hornadays. the accutrigger should be good, needs no adjusting.

The complaint is that there's not enough knockdown power for groundhogs at 100+ yards with a 17 HMR so guys go to a 204 Ruger many times.

It's a fun little gun to shoot, economical, low recoil, and I would think it would be good on squirrels to at least 75, if not 100 or so yards.

Well finally shot something - a squirrel at 50 yds.:D Blew up the head. I would guess if it hit ghog bone would knock down. Yes it is a bull barrel.

:) beauty ain't it?

They were talking about body shooting hogs at 150 yards and having them crawl into their hole, where I'm quite qure they died...

I have hunted ground hogs with a 17 remington and never had any problems killing them out to 200yds with the 25 grn hollow pts. However on windy days it wasn't to good, so I would use the 243 or 6mm .:D

I have the same gun as well with a bushnell 6-18x scope on it. The gun is awesome! I have hit groundhogs out to 250 yards but as stated before, they sometimes make it into the hole if you don't get a head shot

i own that same gun with the same scope... site it in at 50 yards your good to 100.... as for squirrels its a little much lol ... it does a number on a head shot haha....id say atleast 75 yards for them or you have a bloody mess... great little gun... that scope is set up for that cal... once you site it in you really dont have to do much it does all the math for you

Most of the responses are Jersey guys, where the ability to use a serious 'hog gun are limited.

I used my 6mm Rem until I had some comments from the neighbors about the noise. I dropped back to my 22RF and got really frustrated with the range limitations (80 yds - 100 if I was 'lucky'). When Hornady introduced the 17 HMR I found the ideal solution for my Jersey 'hog gun.

It has the same velocity as the original 22 Hornet load that many still swear by, but at a noise level the neighbors could tolerate and a bullet that doesn't 'bounce' like a 22RF.

My HMR is a T/C Contender with the Sweet-17 scope. I only take heart-lung or head shots and every one I've shot died. It is very wind sensitive. It forces you to learn to dope the wind or miss, but on calm days it is poison out to 180+ yards. I haven't had much opportunity beyond that range, but feel the gun is up to it if I do my part. Hornady made a genius move with the HMR.

http://www.savagearms.com/93R17FXP.htm
also just ordered a bipod for it.
looking forward to the warmer weather to knock off some hedge grizzlys.
been seeing them mid day on farms and road sides.
i picked up a box of shells for it, $15 for them. about right? they are the 20gr XTP rounds.

i'm a big fan of the savages, this will be my third rifle from them, .300wsm, .270 win, now the .17hmr.

i'm as gitty as a school girl right now. :D

should get it in a week.

i own that same gun .... its great... very accurate, although mine does not have the accutrigger ... i hear thats the best... for the money savage makes one hell of a gun and probably one of the most accurate guns! (from what i read anyway)

yea, I was goign to try some the managed recoild loads at 100 grains out of the .270 but I think it's gonna be a bit too much noise in Jersey :(

i would think that would be a little loud for the flat landers darrin.
i thought about loading down my .243
but i'd rather buy a new gun.

Varmit Al's site is very informative. I love the pix of HMR hits on lead sheets and balls. Shows the power of the HMR.

shot her in at the range. not a bad group at 100. i had a hot barrel, so it should tighten up a bit. i'll do a little more taget shooting with a cold barrel.
then a quick walk around a wheat field, locked and loaded. it's still a little cold at sun set for hogs. nobody wanted to play tonight.

Playing in my backyard already each day this week all around the garden....Bastard is gonna get his....:fight:

You think he would notice the sudden lack of squirrel friends around the fruit trees...Just a little out for range of the RWS on his fat tomato/pepper eating ass...soon enough little buddy, soon enough.

ground hogs are good snaring practice. about the same as a coon, just a little lower. make sure they can't get back in the hole.

Already thought of that one!!

And probably lined up another 18 acre piece with canine/poultry conflict through a friend yesterday too!!

Gonna post some pics for you when I get a chance UB. Box trap--old school style...manufactured by the nj department of corrections about forty years ago.

had a hog taunting me today. driving down the road after work, i look over, there's a groundhog on the top of a chainlink fence. the fence didn't have a top rail, so he was rocking back and forth. head on one side, ass on the other. i had the .17 with me, and a orange hat. but it wasn't the place to unlease the demon. :naughty:

i need a good warm front.
