I am looking for a new slug gun for deer. What would you guys pick a Remington 870 or a H&R slug gun? I have shot a 870 before and like them but have heard good things about the H&R.

I can only speak about the remington because thats what I've shot...I have an 870 wingmaster with a rifled barrel and cantilever scope mount. I can can group inside a 3 inch circle at 100 yds on a bad day. That's all i need out of shotgun.

I also shoot an 870 wingmaster/cantilever rifled set up. Other than kicking like no other, I love it. Just bought an 1187 20guage. We will see which one becomes my gun of choice.

I have several of both. They are both good guns. The 870 shines if you want or expect to make multiple shots. With the H&R you won't need to make follow-up shots. They are deadly accurate. My son's Ultra slug hunter youth 20 ga has almost no recoil and punches a single hole group at 100 yards with lightfield slugs. Can't go wrong either way in my book.

I have both and agree 100% with Unami.

H&R all the way I have a high dollor browning slug gun that is very accurate but the H&R is just as accurate and has way more range.

I would go with the H&R also. I have a 870 ,mossberg 500 and a H&R.The H&R fits much better if you are using a scope.I also think the trigger is better. The only draw back is they are heavy atleast in 12 guage.I would consider a 20 guage . The H&R is definatley the most accurrate of my 3 slug guns.

there are 2 different versions, the slugger with the BULL barrel is the heavy. i beleive its like 9 lbs, but it helps with the recoil. personally i like it. i just bought a pair of those shooting sticks. they really help. or i just shoot from the sitting position. this gun is my favorite out of all the guns ive owned. and once you find the slug that YOUR h&r shoots the best. look out. i wouldnt hesitate taking a 175yd shot with mine. my dad has the mossberg 500/slug barrel. and my h&r shoots much better

Only drawback is single shot. Iread an article in a recent outdoor mag. 20 best deer rifles it mentioned a TAR they said it wasthe best thing for under 200 yd. use better than most rifles. I think it was outdoor life.

The Tarhunts are outstanding guns. A bit too expensive for my taste though. There are several other guns out there for a fraction of the price that perform as well. The H&R, Savage, Mossberg 695 bolt to name a few. If money was no object then I would go with the Tarhunt. For the price you pay for one I would be affraid to take it out in the woods. My Mossberg is all beat up but working great. I'm almost ashamed to show it to people it is so dinged and scratched up. I may send it out and have it done in T-Cote since I hunt in any weather and I do a lot of crawling around still hunting.
