Headed out early for a morning hunt with my buddy Greg and set up at the mouth of large creek feeding into the bay. Not much was happening early until some brant decided to stretch their wings. Saw a bunch of black ducks but none wanted in. We shot a brant and 2 buffies and called it by 10:30. We then took a break, warmed up and headed back out into the cloudy conditions with high hopes. We had a few more buffies tryin to come in but most were out of range. We did kill 3 more brant before we called it a day. We did our share of missin, thats for sure! For the first coastal hunt, i was happy to take home 6.

Nice shooting. I got some teal, hoodies, and a black in the coastal zone yesterday. Saw about 3 dozen buffs on Friday morning. And a few thousand brant rafted up back in the sound. Largest flock I have ever seen. You could hear them from miles away when they would all get up and move around. Pretty cool.

Yes, i did the same. Meanmachine from the barn, got a new pup last week and he wanted fresh wings to train his new pointer. The rest are put in the freezer.

I eat them. I don't like to kill things unless I'm going to eat them. I've been told by everyone for years that brant and merganzers and buffs taste like crap. But if you brine them or soak them in milk for a day it takes a lot of the marshy taste out. I've cooked some brant this year that tasted just as good as any duck I've ever cooked.
