Is it ok to leave your muzzleloader loaded ( without the primer cap ) when you leave the woods and go home ? I just take out the cap and I put a napkin over the nipple and let the hammer ride forward . What do you guys do ?

That's what I did when I came out of the woods, just took the cap off and I put alittle plastic cap over the nipple. I forgot where I got the cap from. Just got too exspensive to blow the charge out with the Co2 discharge.

A muzzle loader after removing the primer or cap is deemed safe and ready to transport in it's case. No need to unload your muzzle loader unless you wont be hunting for a while. At least that's how I understand it.

If you do decide to leave the powder in for sometime in between uses, do not bring the gun from a cool to warm climate and back again, your build up moisture and gun will not fire correctly. You may just get a pop like that of the cap firing only, or you may get a half power style pop, where to shot is ejected but at a much less velocity. It may only go 30 ft out of the barrel.

if you happen to have a sling on your gun like myself i close the hammer on the sling and case it up (soft leather).WORD TO THE WISE;i won a muzzleloader last year and left my old one loaded for the year took it out and oh my god NOT GOOD rust so bad i busted all my knuckles open trying to get nipple off and cannot get bullet out of barrel even with the screw on the end of rod . pulled rite out.. my bad iknow ..it was the hot to cold to house caused to sweat im guessing. the powder is so corrossive:(

I leave my gun loaded and in my garage where it's pretty cold... If you leave the gun loaded try not to bring it in and out of the house because of the temp difference. I lost a nice deer last year because of a misfire because of that. I would suggest keeping the gun in the vehicle, but now a days I would trust anyone! Your gun is technically not loaded until the cap is on...
