Yes, you can. Stay away from sabots though. Try something simple like Remington Sluggers and see how they shoot in your gun. But if you are hunting in NJ you will need rifle sights to shoot slugs. Have you tried patterning buckshot?

I shoot slugs out of my Ithaca SKB semiauto , try the Breniki (rifled slugs ) they are made to spin in a smooth bore barrels ONLY--NOT FOR RIFLED BARRELS !!! They pattern great .

Also try a box of ACTIVS.

These Activ slugs were by far the best shooting slugs from a couple different barrels that I've had, both rifled and smoothbore. I chronographed them at 1604 fps from my 21" winchester barrel, and that's plenty fast enough for me. Best part is that they're cheap too. I only wish I knew where to buy them, I don't think they make them anymore and my supply is running out.

This (the one on the right) is the only slug that I've ever recovered from a deer. It entered the left chest area with the deer facing me, and I found the slug under the skin in the deer's right hind quarter. The base wad was still attached too. For a big hunk of soft lead, that is pretty good penetration. Gotta love those Activ slugs.

Got my first deer with my Ithaca 20 ga with a slug. It was my single shot..so I wanted something I knew would hit hard.
