This year I'm in the market for a new hunting knife. Basically, it will just be for gutting deer and maybe a small game animal or two. I've decided on a Gerber lockblade. 4" blade with the clip point.
What have you guys found to be the best. I like this knife because it's compact and light-weight. I'm trusting that I'll be able to keep a razor-sharp edge on it for years. Some knives will, some won't.
What are your tried and true guttin' knives?

I have been using the whitetail skinner made by Outdoor Edge for years. I did six moose and two deer and only had strap it between each one I just bought one of their swing blade knives because it has a bigger gut hook for moose .They cost alittle more .but I think they are worth it

I sell all kind of knives and carry a knife 365 days a year. The Gerber you speak of is my personal favorite and will serve you well. Just make sure you get the one that is half serated. It will open a deer up from groin to throat in a minute or two.

I actually went with the blade with no serated area on purpose. My last knife had it and I never used it. I figured I'd be better served with all sharp, cutting and slicing surfaces. Did I make a mistake? I guess I'll find out. Hopefully sooner than later.

The Kodi Pack by Outdoor Edge, such a good deal everyone in our club has one now. It's a 3 peice set, gutter, skinner & bone saw you can gut, skin & quarter a deer, elk or moose in no time with this set. It's in the Cabelas catalog, check them out. For my bow pack i carry either a 4" buck lockblade or my gerber 3 peice 4" lockblade, has 2 knives and a saw on it. To me, if you want to do a thorough job field dressing, you need a saw. I've ruined too many knives trying to bust the pelvic with a droppoint blade and a rock. That butout tool is intrigueing though, might check that out.

I may try the butt out, too. I'll put it in the dishwasher with our eating utensils while the wife is standing there. See if I get a reaction. :fight::D

and that guy from the other Barn put his dog feces shoes in the washer with his wife's clothes. :D It's OK, though, because he covered the tracks on the carpet with the Daily Times. :D

matt my x bought me that same knife piece for x-mas a few years ago and i love the blade has yet to be sharpened after 20 plus deer gutted and the saw is used as a tree limber and to cut the pelvic bone. never got to use the skinner knife lost it using it to cut bunker on the beach:thdown:. they have a dual pack the gutting knife and saw the sheeth is a little less compact. you really get your money worth.

Buck 110 hunter. My father gave me mine for my 12th birthday. I'm 47 now and I'm sure I've gutted over 100 deer with it. I just gave my 12 year old son one this year for his birthday --it brought back a lot of memories.

Used my new Gerber to not only gut a deer, I skinned it with that knife and did some butching with it as well. Held up nicely.

Those Buck Knives with the fixed blade. The ones with the black and chrome handle. For 40$ it's not a bad deal. The thin blade holds a good edge and is ideal for cutting those straps out:)

Don't use a knife for deer, bear, etc., I have been using a utility knife for about 20years now, use it for the intial cut, you can't get a knife any sharper than a razor. After you use it just tossthe blade, pop in another one, it's that easy. For the inside work I use a Buck#110, but for the first cut from neck to hindquarter use the utility knife, this also saves the blade on my Buck knife. Once you get the deer/bear on its back, or pulled up in a upright position the utility knife just walks right down the hide like a zipper. The blade length is adjustable so I use the same set-up for small game. Just a suggestion...

I have seen guys use the razor and it works great. It slips out too easily for me. I like to make a small cut at the pelvis and get two fingers in there with the knife between them and start cutting upward. I can guide the knife much better this way and I cut less hair also.

Case 5" folding hunter. I just love Case knives. Honestly, though, there are hundreds of decent choices out there; it all depends on your taste. Main mistake made by new guys is that they think they need a machete to dress a deer. Your knife doesen't have to be very large; just good quality and SHARP!

I have a Buck 105 also since I'm 17 now 35 and it's always sharp and ready . Did plenty of deer , 3 Bears and numerous small game . I bought a gerber fixed blade w/ gut hook for my dad that's what he wanted I wasn't too empressed with the gut hook but I did buy afolding Geber like yours I like the compact size , doesn't have serrated and I don't miss it. Also stays sharp . Goog Luck this season !!!!!!!!!! :D

I liked the hook....on the first deer. The second one it barely got the job done, after that it was useless. I tried to resharpen and it was a disaster. I used a small rounded steel.

The swing blade has a regular 3.5in blade then you swing that blade around and there is .3.5in long gut hook.It is not your standard little hook at the end of your knife.I have done two moose and a bear with mine and have had no problems.

The verdict is back on the Gerber 3.5 inch blade clip point.
One doe, one squirrel, one buck. Gutted and skinned. Sharp as a blade. Handled great and it feather light and compact when folded.

For a sharp knife I always took my knives to a shop in Williamstown called JUST KNIVES. It is in the center of town right across the street of Monore Saving and Loan Bank. They always did a great job on all of my knives. Ask for Paul Jr. and tell him that Zac told you about his place.

I carry that Gerber as my day to day pocket knife and have to say it's the best handling and easiest to maintain knife i have ever owned. I lost the clip off mine though :( I need a new one...
My deer knife is a buck 102 I won back in 85 with my first ever buck in a local contest. It has done 40 or 50 deer and more birds and other critters that I care to try and count. I'm using a sharpener now instead of a stone it's much easier to maintain.
Next for me is a high quality 6" fillet knife for breasting birds, sine that's all I do anymore.
And BTW we used the butt out this week and it actually works really well. Far easier than getting in there and cutting everything lose. It also works for... well... that other part of the doe you have to remove...

I just picked up an Anza. It is made out of a wood file. They grind the file into a blade and it is razor sharp. It's about as close to a custom knife as you can get for the money and they are made in the US. It's a real nice knife but hey I'm a knife guy.

I got a kelgin trout and bird knife @ 20 years ago. Its only got a 1 3/4" blade and has a lanyard. With the lanyard I can drop the knife and use both hands. The blade is razor sharp. Ive probably done over a hundred deer with that little knife. I totally love it. I've used dozens of other knives of all different makes and always go back to the good old Kelgin. They are hard to find but if you want a custom knife they will make whatever you want. Top quality stuff. A bit expensive but it's a true heirloom quality knife.

Hey if you check out the newest Orvis catalog there are two really nice folding knives in there for about 100 dollars. Check them out Orvis has nice stuff. I also like that boker arbilito with a stag handle.

Western folding 932. 2 blades one for cutting and one for sawing. Holds good edge and saw works great on bone. Have used this for over 25 years and cut over 100 animals, many fish, and wood.
If you can find one this is a great "multi-purpose" knife to carry while afield.

I've been using a Benchmade Griptillian folder knife. They are pricey($90) but well worth it. If you like a smaller knife to do the job rather than a big giant machete then I recomend benchmade knives. many models available. Cabelas has on clearance now a benchmade 9'' fillet knife, i picked up a coulple from cabelas for like $20/ea. it folds up and you carry in on your belt. I cut up a bunch of critters with it. stays sharp to.

Barnesx :)I have been hunting my whole life and knives have always been with me. Till I had a true hand made knife I never really apreciated the work that goes into a one of a kind beautiful creation that some knife makers can do. I literaly said, I wanted Simbar stag handle, black and green spacers, a nickle bolster and 6 1/2 in blade. This knife metal was saw mill blade steel and is razor sharp. Shame the maker is out of business. Contact some one and have one made, they can be resonable and of good quality with out breaking the bank. Well worth it in my opion
