Not a fun day at all. Of course the next day proved especially nice to me....1st 8 pointer
Definitely hoping for more favorable weather this year for the opener. I'll take a slight overcast sky, with a high of 35 and a fresh layer of snow on the ground.
Whatever it is, I'll be in the stand before first light on Dec. 1st waiting to hear that first crack of a rifle.

I'll take a temp of 20. Get the deer moving. ;)
Don't want the high to get over 32 if there's snow. The top layer will melt and then freeze over night. CRUNCH, CRUNCH, CRUNCH :D

What a miserable opener weather wise. I stuck it out until about 11 am but with the wind still blowing the rain into my eyes even with the hood pulled tight, I pulled the plug. When I got back to camp Breakfast no. 2 was just about ready and the deck was shuffled and waiting.:D At least the limited pressure during the opening day last season upstate should hopefully lead to a better age class for 08.

Besides the fog affecting visibility, last years weather was pretty good on opening day I thought. While the wind and rain may have affected deer movement, it but excellerated hunter movement "Key". I prepared for rain just as I would for any other weather - if cold I dress warm, for rain I dress to stay dry and $30 for a tree umbrella is cheap compared to cold weather clothing, there's no excuse not to have one. I sat all day waiting for wet hunters to get out of their stands and move deer. Started seeing deer at 9 and saw deer all day until I called a buck in from a distance to get a better look, turned out to be a 120+" 8 pt. I shot him at 15 yards with my 7mm mag. I'll take rain and wind 1st day over too warm weather that folk & deer will sit longer in. Of course, I'd prefer extreme cold and snow cover which keeps the deer moving and cold hunters moveing, but i'll take any weather over sitting in the cabin on opening day of deer season you wait all year for.

Those tree umbrella's are the best. been useing them for years. You can even use them as a blind when siting on the ground. Way better then wearing rain gear.A high of 28 with 2'' of snow on the ground, It dont get much better then that. One good thing about the weather last year is the deer population dident get whacked to bad because of alot of hunters coming in early or not goin out at all. Alot of hunters will only hunt opening day and then that is it till next year. I think this is gonna be a good year.

I was just a Dicks and they have tree umbrellas for 20 bucks. I think I'll be picking one up this year for sure. They do advertise it as a ground blind as well.
