Anyone know the quality of tanning done on site at a local taxidermist. Thought this involved some serious equipment.

What are you going to do with the hide once it's tanned? It depends what you are using it for on just how you need to tan it. Do you just want to keep the hide on the wall get you some borax and work in real good . Do you want hair on or off? If you want gloves or something like that you need to send it off and have it done by a pro.

A local taxidermist said he tans all his hides on site prior to mounting to speed up the process. Said he could have your head returned in 4 or 5 months. I never heard of that.

not many do it any more.
it's just easier to send out and pass the cost to the customer.

JC used to do it, when he was on pole tavern circle. he did a pie bald pelt for me. i think just his wife mounts stuff now. they aren't in the 2nd shop they had in monroeville now either.
no contact info for ya, sorry.

I never heard of that.I know a few taxidermist,s who do there own deer hides and have them back in five to six months. The last couple have been done in their shops and they turn out pretty good. One is several years old and it still looks good. One reason some send them out is if the hair slips[falls out] they can blame it on the people that tanned it.

I use to dabble in mounting deer heads and there is a process that sry tans head in 2 weeks, I have a few of my own and they have lasted many years. Usually they send the hides out to be tanned .
