Every year I hear about hunters who go out of state and get in trouble because they didnt read that states regs. They asume that the laws are the same everywhere and they dont need to read the book. I also here about violaters who know they were violating but are shocked at the extent of the fines. Again they asumed fines where the same as back home. Dont ever asume you know the law of another state ....read the book. Some examples:
Every year hunters in PA get caught with semi- auto rifles that they use legaly in Maine and NY.
Every year baiters get caught in PA and are shocked that killing a deer over bait results in a three year revocation and a minimum $500 fine. I was in court when a guy got convicted for killing a bear 800 yeards from bait. $10,000.00 fine and 5 years revocation. Yeah I know baiting is leagal down in Jersey but in the Mountains of PA it is not only illegal but considered highly unethical and is treated that way by the judge.
There is no safe distance from bait in PA. The old lawin NJ was 300 yeards away you where OK, But in PA the bait can be 1/2 mile away or more and it wont matter if the trail the hunter is on is leading to it. There is a 30 day window in which all bait needs to be cleaned up including all the soil dug out and removed form liguid baits. If the CO finds even one footprint digging in the soil he will make the arrest.
Out west eastern hunters evrey year loose their brand new pickup trucks. In the west if you are transporting an illegal kill they can take your truck and auction it off.
Hunting after hours is ticketed up here if the CO hears a shot after legal shooting hours or sees a vehicle he will wait for that hunter to come out of the woods. If there is a shell in the gun after hours the ticket book always comes out.
I was Muzzleloading Elk in COLORADO years ago and had sighted my gun in with sabots. The night before the guide was to pick us up at the hotel I read the book and was suprised to find that sabots were illegasl. The next morning I had to go out and buy some maxi balls and sight the gun in again.
Loaning or using someone elses tag is a common violation but the penalty is more sever then the violaters imagined. I say violaters because what shocks em evertime is when the CO'S find a wifes or childs tag on a deer and they are not present they will go to the wifes place of work or the childs school and arrest them. The $500 fine tagged on the the shooters fine is mild compared to how pissed the wife is that her husband got caught using her tag.

I remember deer hunting in NY up in Roscoe one year back in the 70's with a fellow who invited me and my brother to attend their annual ritual with his brothers. They had a habit it turns out of not filling out their tags, going home with their kill, and going out and hunting again. There was a CO waiting at the bottom of the mountain that night on opening day when two of the bothers dragged their deer out. Their license tags were not filled out. The CO asked them to follow him into town. The judge met them in his bathrobe. And their fine was whatever cash they had on their person that night if they wanted to go home. I never hunted with that fellow again. I'm sure it's a little more sophisticated today, but that was pretty funny.

Perhaps someone can answer this one for me as my memory is pretty foggy on this particular issue: Can one hunt in PA with a legally-owned revolver if they do not have a carry permit?

I beleive you need a pistol hunting permit from the game commision or the county carry permit. Ill look at the book tommorrow when im up at my camp.

crossing state lines with guns preset a problem also... I'm not sure about this but I believe there are forms to fill out when traveling state to state with firearms

You need a sportsman's permit from your PA county of origin. Not sure how it works for an out of stater with a handgun. Call the Game Commission, I'm sure they will be happy to help you. They are not as bad as everyone lets on. They are just doing their job.

Depends, was it human? :p Thats great! I find all kinds of skulls when shed hunting but never really though if it was against the law I allways give critter skulls to kids, I may be doing something wrong I really don't even know!

Non-residents need only go to the County seat to get a permit to hunt with a pistol. Take your hunting license. The fee used to be $2.00. Don't know what it is now.

sheds? i thought they were legal to have. i know skulls aren't because there's no way to prove you found it laying in the woods, but sheds are a differant story. that animal was'nt dead when it droped.

If you have a pa carry permit, you still cant bring a hand gun into the woods during hunting season, you need another permit for hunting with a handgun, this is what i was told a few years back,
