Sorry if this was covered before, but I havn't hunted in 9 years and I know a lot has changed.
Can you shoot a smooth slug through a rifled barrel, or are they only used for the sabot type . I bought a Rem 870 pump with both barrels. I was shooting the Rem slugmaster 5.99$ 2 3/4 with the smooth barrel and it was good to 50 yards but only has the vent rib with end bead. Can I shoout those slugs down the rifled barrel with front and rear iron sights

Sabot slugs are shot through a rifled barrel. Rifled slugs are shot through a smoothbore barrel.

Do not shot a rifled slug in a rifled barrel .A lead rifled slug will fill up the lands and grooves in a rifled barrel. the fins or rifling on a rifled slug most of the times goes the opposite way of a rifled barrel. Then you end up with a smooth bore and you have a major job getting the lead back out.I have worn out two or three brushes cleaning barrels people have tried to save money by using the cheaper slugs. It's does not work

If you are hunting in NJ you need a scope or a metal sight. You can't legally hunt with the rib / bead barrel.

There are at least two types of sights that clip onto a shotgun vent rib for Jersey/Pa hunting. Look at Bass Pro or Cabela's.

if u read the box rem. sluggers says u cam shoot them in a rifled barrelI did not say you can not shoot them I said if you do you had better have some spare time because I have had to clean up rifled barrel's where people did so to save a little money.I have seen some rifled slugs shoot pretty good after a box or two had been shot, but then you have a smooth bore.

i understand that, but whats do they mean when they say it safe to shoot them throught a rifled barrel, i thought they meant it wont hurt the rifleing, with any lead build up,

try the cooper coated bullets they are faster and more accuracy some have lead heads because of laws in some states must have a lead expandable head my son inlaw had some and I tried them great at 100 yards and little fouling I think cabelas may have them.

My experience with this has most certainly been that if you want a dead deer at any kind of distance don't shoot rifled slugs through a rifled barrel. I did this and missed a nice buck that I was dead on with my scope. It shot under the deer. When i took the gun out and shot it to sight it in, I tried getting away cheap and sighting it close with rifled slugs, then fine tuning it with the sabots. What I found is that these rifled slugs through a rifled barrel are erratic at best. They would shoot one out of say five where I actually intended to put the slug. The bottom line is that after shooting about ten rounds, i could not get it to zero in. I cracked open the sabots that I brought with me and had it dead on using only four slugs. I think the opposite twist on the rifling makes them fly out of the barrel erratic, and that's why they don't fire consistently. Do yourself a favor and spend and extra few bucks because I found that it didn't take that many rounds to get it to shoot where I wanted it to.:shoot:
