Any HVAC guys or appliance people? I have a house fridge in my detached garage and was wondering if it works below an outside temp? I checked freezer this AM and it was 30deg:(, on Sat when it was 60 outside the freezer was 15 deg:)
I have some meet in there and would hate to lose it.
I had heard fridges don't work under a certain temp but I'm not sure

We've got one in our garage too. But the only thing thats in it is beer, soda, water. That kinda stuff. Dunno if it would hurt the freezer.

had the spare fridge in the garage a few winters ago when it was real cold and it turned off, ruined a bit of meat on me. i dragged it in the washroom now climate control. from my experience it is not a good idea to keep it in the garage or outside.

I've got my chest freezer in my detached garage without heat, and am wondering the same thing now. I've had fridges in non climate controlled shops without issue, but then again they were only for drinks and lunches. I guess I'll find out soon enough.
Answer me this: If it is so cold that my freezer shuts off, how will anything spoil?

You know its weird , it was actually warmer in the freezer box than the outside air of the garage. I'm gonna tray to load it up with non perishable stuff to see if that keeps it working, soda, beer, waters, beer, beer

I was planning on putting a freezer box in my garage for meat storage to free up inside space. If anyone finds out any info shoot me an email.

I had heard that there were special combo units to protect against cold weather for really cold climates. I also found this on another web site and it makes sense.

There are loads of myths that go with refrigerators and freezers. The temperature will not hurt the compressor, the problem is usually with refrigerators in unheated garages because the thermostat that controls temperature is in the fresh food section. In the winter, the outside temperatures are usually lower than the normal temp. setting inside the fresh food section; therefore the thermostat never tells the compressor to come on, so the freezer has a tendency to defrost the food because the compressor is never being asked to come on. All the cold comes from the freezer and is blown into the fresh food section, so if the fresh food temperature is satisfied, the compressor will not come on to safisfy the freezer. With a freezer, it is different because the asked for temperature is only in one compartment, so there would be no defrosting. If I was not clear, please email back and I will try to simplify my answer, but the bottom line is that you will be fine, you will not damage the compressor.
