there is substantial gpr on the exterior of my stainless barrell. I have tried wiping it and want to use steel wool as a last resort. any suggestions on using something other than the steel wool? also, can anyone recommend a good cleaner for the inside and outside of the barrell?

For cleaning i like to use the T/C T13 or T17 clothes you may need to use 6 or 7 until there is no more residue on the inside, then i use 3 or four dry clothes to remove the excess cleaner left behind, before storing i run through one T/C bore butter cloth to keep the inside from rusting. For the breach plug i use the T/C breach plug solution with an old tooth brush and some pipe cleaners to clean out the inside. For the exterior, after every use i wipe down the entire gun with Wonder Cloth which is a rust inhibitor.

DO NOT use steel wool. Steel Wool is basically carbon steel and you will cross contaminate big time,Everywhere that Steel Wool touched would be rust marks.
I would use a fine Scotch Britte. There is no way you can hurt the barrel other than with the Steel Wool. The Scotch Britte may Polish a different look onto the barrel. If the barrel is highly polished after the Scotch Britte it will have a mate finish. If the barrel is mate to begin with go for it but do the whole barrel so it blends nice.

That woulda been a serious mistake.... never use other metals on metals, big time contamination issues...she woulda been old school rust looking real fast

My Dad shoots blackpowder comp., when he cleans his rifles he uses a mixture of equal parts of rubbing alcohol Murphy's oil, and Hydrogen Peroxide. It does a great job on getting BP residue out of his barrels. In fact he sent some to me to use while I'm out here in Iraq for my M4. Everyone here joked about it until I was done cleaning weapon and they were still trying to get the build up out of their barrels. Then it was "Hey Doc can I try some of your stuff"
